the Hughes Brothers Come Back from the Dead

August 12, 2009 Leave a comment

Back in the early ’90s, when black filmmakers were making movies about teenage crime in urban areas, ‘Boyz n the Hood’ and ‘Menace II Society’ were clear standouts. The latter was directed by twins Albert and Allen Hughes, aka the Hughes Brothers. The brothers were responsible for igniting the careers of Larenz Tate, Clifton Powell Jada Pinkett Smith and Chris Tucker.

Since their 2001 film ‘From Hell,’ which starred Johnny Depp, the brothers have been low-key. But their latest collaboration with Denzel Washington in ‘The Book of Eli’ has brought them back into the spotlight.

Co-starring Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals, the Warner Bros.’ post-apocalyptic thriller revolves around a lone warrior, Eli (Washington), who must fight to expose knowledge that could bring civilization back from the brink of destruction. Oldman has been set to portray the despot of a small makeshift town who’s determined to take possession of the book that Eli’s guarding.

While attending this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the Detroit siblings, along with Washington, spoke about their film and waiting so long for the right project.

Lawyer: Rihanna Has to Testify if Called to Trial

March 9, 2009 2 comments

Rihanna’s attorney says the singer would testify against Chris Brown if called as a witness in her boyfriend’s assault case. Donald Etra, who is representing the 21-year-old Barbados native, said Friday that Rihanna would be required by law to testify if prosecutors subpoena her.

Etra appeared in court Thursday when Brown made his first appearance on charges of assaulting and making criminal threats to his superstar girlfriend. Brown’s arraignment was postponed until April 6.

Etra said Rihanna did not want a "no contact" order issued against Brown, but that she will report any violations of an order prohibiting the 19-year-old singer from threatening, harassing or harming his girlfriend. A court order grants her the authority to record any violations of the order.

The order is not uncommon in cases where a victim says he or she doesn’t want to completely cut off communication with a person, said Steve Cron, a Santa Monica criminal defense attorney who has represented celebrities such as Paula Poundstone and Scott Weiland.

"There are limits to when you can record phone calls and conversations," Cron said. "She can record those conversations if it’s for the purpose of showing there’s a violation of the restraining order."

Etra said Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, wants the case over with quickly. "She wants to get along with her life and career," he said.

Black News: DL Hughley’s CNN Show Finally Canceled

Comedian D.L. Hughley was pummeled by critics when his weekend talk show debuted on CNN last fall. "What the hell was CNN thinking?" a columnist forAdAge asked after watching the first episode. It remains unclear what was running through the minds of CNN execs when they signed him up for the spectacularly unfunny program featuring painfully awkward interviews. But the network may have come to its senses or at least decided to cut its losses. A source tells us that CNN has decided to cancel the show due to "budgetary constraints."

Tyrese Will Be On Welfare Soon

March 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Seems that Tyrese’s estranged wife Norma Mitchell is taking him for every penny that he has. Ty has to pay Norma $65,000 a month, and in addition to this he has to pay $6,230 a month in child support, her rent ($2,730), and her car payment ($800). Not to mention Tyrese only makes $800,000 a year. Prior to their 10 month marriage Norma signed a pre-nup, but from the looks of things it has not been beneficial for Ty.

Tyler Perry Plans Private Island Purchase for His 40th

Tyler Perry can soon add yet another feat to his list of accomplishments: island owner!
When the movie mogul turns the big 4-0 this September, he plans to join the ranks of David Copperfield and Mel Gibson with the purchase of the ultimate getaway.
"I’m a loner by nature, so when I’m out there on these islands, I just feel like the only person in the world," says Perry, whose latest film, Madea Goes to Jail, grossed a whopping $41 million its opening weekend.
After recently spending a week vacationing on a private island in the Great Exumas in the Bahamas, he admits it’s not all relaxation: "Renting an island is the best place for me to work uninterrupted."

T-Boz from TLC Pops Up Again

March 2, 2009 Leave a comment

Donald Trump probably knows TLC as the cable network, not the biggest female group of the 1990s.

In fact, the host of “Celebrity Apprentice” (season two debuting Sunday on NBC at 9 p.m.) had trouble pronouncing Atlanta’s own Tionne “T Boz” Watkins’ first name. Watkins said he kept saying “T-own” instead of of the proper “T-on.” So after awhile, he just called her “T.”

Hip hop “is probably not part of his world,” she mused in a phone interview Tuesday.

But Watkins said she did not go out of her way to kiss his tuckus. Plus, “I didn’t Omarosa it,” she said, turning one of the most infamous “Apprentice” contestants of yore into a verb. Compared to the likes of Andrew “Dice” Clay and Dennis Rodman, “I made boring TV.”

Rather, she focused on making sure the Sickle Cell Foundation was front and center, not her ego. What makes her charity hit so close to home is she was born with Sickle Cell and has had to cope with the fatigue and a weak immune system all her life. See her video below:

Dr Boyce: Chris Brown and Rihanna Back Together? What?

March 2, 2009 4 comments

By Dr. Boyce Watkins

www.BoyceWatkins.com

Forgive me for diving into the crazy world of pop culture, but the fact that Chris Brown and Rihanna are a couple again is something on which I had to comment. I am not speaking on the issue because I love Chris Brown or Rihanna’s music (they are ok). I am commenting because young people need to have a serious conversation about relationships and domestic violence.

Here’s the deal: I don’t know exactly what Chris Brown did and did not do. From the picture I saw and police reports, it appears that he may have done some serious damage to Rihanna’s face. Again, I am not convicting Chris Brown and I am not pretending to know if he is a bad human being. In fact, Chris Brown could very easily be a good man who did a very bad thing. But if he did do this damage to Rihanna, then he should pay a price for his actions.

But it appears that Chris won’t be paying a price, since Rihanna does not seem to be interested in pressing charges. Rihanna’s actions are nothing new: Every day, across America, women are beaten to a pulp by their boyfriends, and then choose to excuse their inexcusable behavior. The prosecutor prepares a solid case that will send the guy packing for years, and the case falls through because the woman chooses not to press charges. So, as extraordinary as Rihanna might be as a performer, her behavior is actually quite ordinary.

Chris Brown, if he was the cause of the facial damage shown on pictures released to the media, seriously needs counseling. He needs to learn that growing up watching your father beat your mother (as Chris admitted on the Tyra Banks show) may establish a destructive social norm, thus making you believe that violence is appropriate in male/female relationships. He also needs to learn about the serious consequences for brothers who choose to beat up on their partners. Even if Rihanna is crazy, provocative or evil, you have no business laying your hands on a woman. Not only is violence wrong, but it will land you in a criminal justice system that destroys the lives of young black men every day. I understand young people making mistakes (I’ve made far too many to count), but you must learn from those mistakes, and we are not doing young people any favors by pretending that this didn’t happen.

Rihanna needs her own counselor. She needs one that will give her and other young women the self-esteem to realize that there are few genuine excuses for a man to put his hands on you. She needs to have someone who truly understands where all this is going, to make her realize that no matter how cute he is, how popular, how rich, or how charming, a man like this can eventually kill you. You don’t know domestic violence until you’ve seen DEATH. It starts innocently enough, and eventually escalates to the point that someone is in the morgue. Any self-respecting adult should, in my humble opinion, refuse to sit idly to the side and allow your teenager to ponder reasons that Chris Brown should have hit Rihanna. No, he should not have done this, and I encourage Chris to make sure he sends the same message.

Old people can be obnoxious. We pee on the parades of young love by writing articles like the one I am writing right now. I hate doing this, but I have my reasons. My friend, a professor in Florida, died at the hands of her husband, who then killed himself and left her two young children without parents. This happens every day, and most of these cases start out like the situation between Chris and Rihanna. In fact, your daughter, friend, sister or cousin may have that lovable boyfriend who only shows peeks and hints of violent behavior, but just enough that your gut is telling you something isn’t quite right. Listen to your instincts, for they’re trying to tell you something. Love should not end with anybody getting punched. Domestic violence is not a silent killer…..it usually warns you all along the way. Whether you choose to listen is up to you.

Black News: Comedian Chris Rock Sued by Woman for Rape

March 1, 2009 1 comment

It’s been more than a decade since Chris Rock and a shapely blond model struck up a conversation over Sunday brunch at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. The relationship that followed was brief — two dinner dates — but there seems to be no end to the fallout from the liaison.

The second date led back to Rock’s hotel room, which led to sex — he has said he was separated from his wife at the time — which led to a paternity suit, then tabloid headlines, an allegation of rape, the hiring of private investigator Anthony Pellicano, two DNA tests, a confidential settlement, testimony before a federal jury and, on Thursday, the revelation of a new civil suit.

Black Celebs: No Charges Filed Yet on Chris Brown

February 27, 2009 1 comment

Misdemeanor or felony?

As police wind down their investigation of Chris Brown in the alleged beating of Rihanna earlier this month, ultimately the injuries suffered by the victim will determine whether the singer faces a charge carrying a likely penalty of probation — or time behind bars.

So far, no charges of any sort have been filed against Brown, 19, who was arrested Feb. 8 in Los Angeles after allegedly assaulting the R&B star. He was booked by police for making criminal threats — a felony — but the case has not yet been presented to the District Attorney, who will ultimately determine which charges, if any, will be prosecuted.

What? Chris Brown Trying to Win Back Rihanna

February 24, 2009 1 comment

According to the NY Daily News:

Chris called Rihanna to wish her a happy birthday,” an insider tells us. “He’s absolutely trying to get back into her good graces. He knows he’s very much in the doghouse right now, and is doing everything he can to show her how sorry he is.”
But Brown seems to think a few well-placed birthday gifts can salve his ex’s wounds. He has already sent the “Good Girl Gone Bad” singer a diamond bracelet and necklace, an insider tells us, as well as an iPod Touch. Plus, Brown’s mom, Joyce, who is said to adore Rihanna, sent over a bouquet of flowers.”

Yeah, we’re pretty sure Rihanna already own an iPod for Goddsakes, and while the jewelry and flowers were nice, we’re just not sure this erases everything Chris. Nice try, though.

Rihanna’s Family Speaks on Brown

February 23, 2009 2 comments

Rihanna‘s family is opening up about the relationship between Rihanna and Chris Brown after an alleged altercation before the Grammy Awards that left Rihanna injured and Brown arrested.

One family member told People.com that Brown "flew so far under everyone’s radar that we just didn’t think he was that [abusive] type." The relative added that the news comes as a surprise because "he was always looking after her needs making sure she was happy."

The relative agreed with Rihanna’s dad, Ronald Fenty, who thinks his superstar daughter should "move on" from the relationship. "I don’t want her to go back to him," the family member said. "I don’t think anyone does."

Earlier this week, Kimora Lee Simmons, who was showing her line Baby Phat during New York Fashion Week, spoke about the incident with The Associated Press, saying she saw the pair earlier in the night before news broke.

Madea is Queen of the Box Office

February 22, 2009 1 comment

If anybody had a reason to doubt whether Tyler Perry has become one of the most bankable brands in all of movies, be skeptical no longer.

'Madea Goes to Jail' wins big at the box office

The domestic dramedy maestro’s latest release, Tyler Perry’s "Madea Goes to Jail," ran away with a big victory on the typically slow Academy Awards weekend, grossing a hefty $41.1 million, according to early estimates from Media by Numbers.

That opening sum is the biggest of all time for a Tyler Perry film, besting the $30 million debut of 2006’s "Madea’s Family Reunion." Too, it’s the top bow in the history of indie studio Lionsgate, improving upon all the Tyler Perry and "Saw" flicks that came before it. The movie’s per-theater average of $20,236 ranks in the top 40 for all wide openers ever.

And, no surprise, "Madea Goes to Jail" achieved all this success with a solid A CinemaScore grade from a crowd that included mostly older women. Video Watch Tyler Perry talk about his success »

Second place went to "Taken," which added another $11.4 million to its four-week tally, bringing said total to $95.2 million. Fellow strong holdover "Coraline" (No. 3) was next with $11 million.

"He’s Just Not That Into You" (No. 4) declined a sharp 56 percent to bank $8.5 million on its third weekend. And Best Picture favorite "Slumdog Millionaire" rounded out the top five with $8.1 million — a sum that brings its domestic total to $98 million.

1. You’ll don’t know if that’s the reason why they had the altercation.
2. Rhianna had an outbreak some weeks ago and during that time Chris was all over her. Go look for the pics. So, I don’t believe that there is any way that he didn’t know that she had herpes.
3. Even if he eventually found out she had herpes and transmitted it to him, who is to say that she always knew she had it. Herpes is a disease that if you don’t have an outbreak and haven’t gotten tested you wouldn’t know you have it. There are lots of people walking around with herpes passing it to others and don’t even know. You can use a condom and still possibly pass it to your lover.
Know the facts about the disease before you start making comments.
4. Who is to say Chris isn’t the one to give her herpes. Everyone doesn’t have the outbreaks so their is no way to know who gave it to whom.
That being said he still had no right hitting her like she is his damn child.
He better get it together quick before Jay or Tay Tay roll up on his behind and wear him out.

yeah it was wrong for chris brown to hit rihanna but if its true that rihanna gave chris herpes, thats wrong. no man should put his hands on a woman period. i’ve been in a abusive relationship that i got out of after 11 monthes. I like chris brown and rihanna but they need to work things out and whatever started the argument needs to stop and chris should of walked away or something then hitting rihanna. chris brown is cute and doesnt deserve to have a STD from anyone he’s too young for that.I say that chris brown needs help with his anger so things can work out between him and rihanna. i think that chris and rihanna is a great couple but not if chris continues to beat on rihanna for whatever it is. i also think that men who beat on women are pussys and do it cuz they are insecure with themselves and cant control nobody else but women. I like you chris brown but you need to quit your abuse on rihanna and try to work things out with rihanna then hitting on her and taking your anger out on her, try to talk things over about your feelings with rihanna it might work out between you two. i hope things work out between you and rihanna.

Lady Drama: Even Michael Jackson Is Having Hard Times!

February 17, 2009 Leave a comment

You aren’t the only one facing hard times even the King of Pop is finding ways to bring in some extra income! According to sources MJ is having a garage sale to rake in some dough. Read Below:
The singer’s most treasured possessions are going under the hammer – in the hope of raising up to £2million for the cash-strapped King of Pop.
Items such as Jacko’s iconic glittery glove – unveiled in the 1983 video for his smash hit Billie Jean – famous stage costumes, flash pieces of jewellery, his luxurious tour bus and many of his paintings, sculptures, awards and arcade games are being auctioned off. The glove – completely covered in clear Swarovski crystals – is expected to fetch up to £10,000 alone.
The gilt and iron gates to Jackson’s Neverland ranch are also up for grabs – with a price tag of between £15,000-£20,000. The sparkly black jacket he wore for his 1984 Hollywood Walk Of Fame star dedication ceremony is also going for a mere £15,000.
But the priciest item by a mile is Jackson’s custom-made 1999 Rolls Royce, which comes with an estimate of £100,000-£112,000. The extravaganza – to be held at a Beverly Hilton Hotel – starts on April 22 and will spread over four days. Organisers say it is bound to give the public a rare glimpse into the private world of the controversial singer.

Just tell me when and where and I’m there!

Chris Brown Finally Addresses the Public

February 16, 2009 2 comments

For over a week it seems that everyone but Chris Brown and Rihanna had something to say about their domestic violence incident, but Chris has finally broken his silence. Chris released a statement earlier today, check out what he had to say below.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person. Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writing under my name are frauds.”

I am definitely glad to see that he is seeking help, and I kind of feel a little sorry for him.

Crazy, Stupid or Brilliant? Readers Defending Chris Brown

February 14, 2009 2 comments

Rihanna and Chris Brown attended a salute to Clive Davis on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.

R&B superstar couple Rihanna and Chris Brown have recently found themselves even more in the spotlight due to their private-turned-public "disturbia" situation. After reports surfaced that Brown allegedly injured the singer to the point where she had to be treated at a "major medical facility" after a quarrel, readers took to the blogs to surprisingly defend the male sex symbol. Since the emergence of the story, we’ve received over 150 comments regarding the situation.

WHITNEY wrote: I’M STILL GOING TO SUPPORT CHRIS BROWN UNTIL THE END. I DONT CARE IF HE DID IT OR NOT. OBVIOUSLY SHE PROVOKED HIM AND EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES SO, IM NOT GOING TO DOWN TALK HIM NOR TRY TO BRING HIM DOWN LIKE THE WHITE MEDIA IS GOING TO. HE’S STILL A KID. KIDS MAKE DUMB CHOICES EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. GIVE THE KID A BREAK IT’S HIS FIRST TIME IN HIS 4 YEAR CAREER.

shukura wrote: By the way, from what I understand Chris Brown is not from the ghetto and and domestic violence happens everywhere. For anyone to suggest that only ghetto people hit their mates is ludicrous. Gosh, why do people always have to resort to racism when something happens in the news. It gets old and very tired.

Your Black News: Usher’s Wife Recovering After Heart Attack

The wife of R&B singer Usher continues to recover in a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing plastic surgery, the spokeswoman of the doctor who was to perform the procedure said Thursday.

Ellen Dastry, spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, says Tameka Raymond checked into the Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction." Dastry said that Raymond suffered a cardiac arrest while being anesthetized for the procedure "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage." She was then placed in an induced coma before being taken to the intensive-care unit, a procedure Dastry said was "absolutely normal" and performed in order to "avoid unnecessary complications."

Lady Drama: More Chris Brown and Rihanna Stuff

February 13, 2009 Leave a comment

New details are emerging about Chris and Rihanna’s domestic dispute that happened during Grammy Night! According to what Rihanna has said in a police report Chris has been abusive before! Read below for the juice via hollyscoop:
According to Police reports, Rihanna claims that Chris has hit her in the past and she referred to it as an ongoing and escalating abusive relationship.
When Rihanna first spoke to LAPD she refused to tell them what started the argument that night. We’ve now learned that it was the result of another woman sending Chris a text message about meeting up later on in the night.
During the argument, according to the police report, she ordered him to drive her home and “faked a call” to someone, saying things like, “He’s dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there,” reports TMZ. This enraged Chris.
He then said something to the effect of “You are really fu**ed up now. I’m going to kill you.” That’s when Chris allegedly began his violent attack with his fists.
At some point during the attack Rihanna took the car keys out of the ignition and threw them outside. He reportedly went outside to look for them, and returned back to the car and allegedly choked her. That’s when she lost consciousness and a witness called 911.
Based on Rihanna’s statement and her injuries Chris will definitely face a felony domestic battery charge, but it’s unclear at this time whether or not that’s the only charge he’ll get because evidence that he made criminal threats against Rihanna is kind of thin.

Damn hate to say I told ya so but damn I TOLD YA’LL ASSES he had to have hit her before for it to escalate to this! I blame publicity for trying to make these kids seem perfect! SHIT happens! I’m also hearing Chris’ music is being yanked from airwaves due to his recent legal issues! Damn just when we thought no one could f*ck up their career more than R.Kelly or Kobe Bryant, Chris comes along and does this 😦

Lady Drama: Rapper Jay Z Furious at Chris Brown

February 11, 2009 Leave a comment

In more Chris and Rihanna news a website called contact music is reporting that Jay Z is furious about the recent incident with Rihanna (like we didn’t already know that)! In any event read the juice below:
CHRIS BROWN is set to incur the wrath of hip-hop king JAY-Z over his alleged assault on R&B star RIHANNA. Brown was arrested on Sunday (08Feb09) for felony battery after an incident with an as yet unidentified woman, reported to be Rihanna, in a vehicle in Los Angeles.
And Jay-Z, who discovered and mentored Rihanna, was reportedly enraged upon hearing the allegations, warning of retributions for Brown. A source tells Us Weekly magazine, “He hit the roof. Chris is a walking dead man. He messed with the wrong crew.”

I’ll just be glad when this is a wrap because like the elastic on some old undies it’s getting stretched out to capacity!

FYI: I should be on the NPR show "Tell Me More with Michel Martin", a journalist for whom I have tremendous respect.  We recorded today with Shelby Steele, a conservative scholar out at Stanford and another scholar named Jon Powell, at Ohio State.  The conversation is interesting, and I recommend you give it a listen.  You can learn more about the show at this link: http://www.npr.org/blogs/tellmemore/.

I also got another call yesterday from "The Big O"…yes, you know who I am talking about.  Apparently, there is some interest in my Financial Lovemaking Book.  I’ll keep you posted on that one, since I am not 100% sure if my demographic matches that of the Great Ms. Winfrey.  While I feel that Financial Lovemaking can work well for her audience, my alignment with the hip hop community may make for an awkward fit.  The fact that I engage in critical analysis (meaning that no one is 100% good or 100% bad) means that I sometimes make enemies in this game because of my refusal to kiss anyone’s butt too much.  But I do give respect where it is due, and I consider Oprah to be an amazing role model for all of us.  The same goes for President Obama.

In light of the fact that Valentine’s Day is coming, I was thinking about the whole idea of love.  I must also admit that I thought about love when I noticed the singer Chris Brown might have ruined his career in this mad situation with Rihanna (apparently, there may be some abuse in that relationship, I’m not sure).  Either way, I think that anyone who has been young and in a relationship understands how stupid and crazy things can happen.  I’ve never considered Chris Brown to be a bad person.  But he may have done a bad thing.

Seeing the huge loss that these two young people may have imposed on their lives (Chris and Rihanna), led me to reflect on love and what it means to me.  Here is my personal perspective on love….love it or hate it (haha).

What Love Should and Should Not Be

By Dr. Boyce Watkins

www.BoyceWatkins.com

I’ve lived a bit of life and made my share of mistakes.  But as a professor, I am trained to learn from poor choices and grow from them.  Most processes have a purpose and a pattern.  If you think hard enough and honestly confront your failures, triumphs and observations, you can usually walk away with a bit of insight.  The term “No pain, no gain”, can certainly be applied in the game of love, and I intend to gain from my own personal portfolio of blissful heartache.

So, I’ve come up with some “Rules of Love” out of respect for Valentine’s Day.  It’s not scientific and not a fit for everyone.  But it comes from the head, the heart and all the other body parts I can’t mention in this article.  So, at least you know it’s sincere.

Love should be RESPECTED: One of the silliest things I see in some relationships is that people seem to be most interested in chasing the person who loves them the least, while kicking their greatest admirers to the curb.  They choose the best option they can GET instead of the best option they’ve already GOT.  There is something that people love about a challenge.  It can be a natural instinct to equate kindness with weakness and easy access with a lack of value. Many of us are guilty of crying over the person who ignores us and ignoring the person who cries for us.  Someone who gives you their heart can also take it away, so we must respect those who’ve truly earned it.

Love should be EXPECTED:   Part of the reason that some of us spend our time chasing the loser who doesn’t love us is because deep down, we feel that someone who cares for us must be flawed or unworthy of our time.  On the other hand, it is easy to feel sorry for yourself when you see that the one you usually want doesn’t want you back.  The truth of the matter is that if someone disrespects the appreciation you are showing toward them, then they don’t deserve your love anyway.  You should love yourself enough to walk away from those who choose not to treat you as you deserve to be treated.

Love should be given to YOURSELF: Part of demanding the love that you deserve is engaging in the difficult art of SELF LOVE.  Many times, we look in the emotional mirror and see blemishes, flaws, faults, mistakes and the ugliest sides of who we are.   Rather than greeting the world with our heads held high, we keep our heads down and hope no one notices that we are not as good as everyone else.  Loving yourself is similar to learning to love another person:  there is a point where you must simply accept the flaws.   You must realize that you are no more defective and no more perfect than everyone else, and that you too deserve to be happy.  If you can’t love yourself, then it’s damn near impossible to truly love someone else, since you are only offering them what you perceive to be damaged goods.

Love is meant to be CELEBRATED:  I’ve admittedly never been able to fully grasp the concept of homosexuality, but I’ve never had a problem with gay marriage.  One thing I believe is that love was created by GOD: that includes love between a man and a woman, a man and a man or a woman and a woman.  There should not be religious, social or racial boundaries imposed on meaningful love, for we do not get to choose the shape, size or complexion of the package.  When God blesses someone with such a powerful connection, this love should be celebrated by all of us and not judged or held in contempt.   Melting someone’s halo of happiness by dousing it with a flood of hate is a counter-productive use of our time and a wasteful spiritual endeavor.

Valentine’s Day is meant to be YEAR ROUND:  You should not need a special holiday to show someone you love them.  You should tell them something good, positive, and affirming every time you see them, because this will make that person feel good.  You should not need corporate America’s permission and some hyper-commercialized holiday as your excuse to show affection.   I encourage you to say ten nice things per day to people you care about, which may include complimenting them on their clothes, their hair, their personality, their beauty or their presence.  It will make them feel good and leave a lasting psychological impact.  Our words are “emotional money” and we should be consistently making donations.

Love should be REFLECTIVE:  The hardest way to get what you want is to selfishly pursue it, take it or relentlessly absorb it.  That’s like waiting for your paycheck and never showing up for work.  If you are in a truly loving situation, you get what you want by REFLECTING IT.   If you WANT more success out of life, you GIVE more hard work.  If you WANT better grades, you GIVE more time to the library.  If you WANT more appreciation from your partner, you GIVE more attention and affection.  If you choose to share your love with someone who deserves it, then they will give the love right back to you, with interest.  Like a healthy economy, the cycle will become recursive and productive trade increases the value of each partner’s “Life Portfolio”.   In pleasure, pain and everything in between, to get more, you must give more.  You must also make payments in the currency deemed most valuable to your partner.  There’s no way around that fact.

Love should be PRACTICED:  Love is not just a feeling, an emotion, a whim or something that makes your skin shiver.  Loving someone is a DELIBERATE ACT and a series of habits designed to sustain and maintain the relationship you have with one another.  The work of the greatest writers in history was not always driven by inspiration and a desire to write…..sometimes, it was the act of sitting down each day and forcing themselves to write which eventually inspired them to do their greatest work.  In other words, love is a series of proactive habits, choices and behaviors that correlate with your desire to have a meaningful and stable relationship with another person.  It’s not something you just randomly “fall into” and “out of”…..it is something you choose to do.

Love should be CONTEMPLATED: When it comes to dating, I tell my daughter and God daughters the following: “If a man is not someone you can see raising your children, then don’t even go out on the first date.”  They look at me like I’m crazy, but the point is simple:  While you cannot easily choose to release yourself from the psychological grips of love, you have some ability to choose who you are going to fall in love with in the beginning.  Most of us don’t meet someone and decide that we are going to be with this person for years.  There is always the first glance, the first date, the first kiss, the first touch, and before you know it, you’re stuck in a situation that doesn’t make any sense to you.  So, if you don’t start with point A, you can never reach point Z.  This makes the most sense when you can see that point Z is not the place you want to visit with this particular person.

Love should be REMEMBERED: A big challenge for many young or single people (and even those who are married) is that we spend our time chasing the love and affection that is most intriguing to our hormones, while ignoring the love that is most tried and true.  A man might spend hours on the phone with a pretty lady who doesn’t even like him, but simultaneously ignore his grandmother who would gladly give her life for him.  Valentine’s Day is not just the day you send “sweets to your sweetie”.  It is also the day you shower love on your mother, brother, sister, father, best friend, homeboy, children, grand parents and all the people who will love you long after your sweetie has become sweet on someone else.   In the city of love, new buildings are shiniest and most appealing.  But the older buildings are the sturdiest and most enduring.

Love is LIFE:  Not only does the act of love create and sustain life, it is also the greatest part of our journey through life.  We may or may not remember or be inspired by our professional or educational achievements, but we have an immediate and powerful emotional reaction when we reflect on the love we’ve experienced over the years.  Thinking about children, family or ex-lovers can create an emotional response that can’t be matched by a corporate job or advanced degree.  I tell my students that one of the most important decisions they will ever make is who they choose to spend their lives with.  I’ve seen many people drive themselves down the path to hell by choosing to share their love with someone who deserves it the least.  Like the most amazing roller coaster, the journey of love is long, complicated, exciting, scary and fulfilling.  So, while we’re on this journey, we should make sure we turn on the GPS.

Happy Valentine’s Day and I hope this day inspires you to find the love that exists in your life.  It’s all around you if you learn to look for it.  Even in an economy like this one, the love in your life can make you a billionaire.

Kanye, TI Speak on Chris Brown and Rihanna

February 10, 2009 1 comment

Not only are all the blogs talking about the assault that Rihanna endured from Chris Brown, now their celeb friends are speaking out too. Rapper Kanye West expressed his feeling about the situation earlier today stating,
She (Rihanna) has the potential to be the greatest artist of all time and, in that sense,…… I feel like that’s my baby sis and I would do any and everything to help her in any situation,… I feel like, just as a person, I don’t care how famous she is or even if she just worked at McDonald’s, that should never happen. It should never come to that place"

Rapper T.I. also commented on the situation on the Last Call With Carson Daly Show. See what he had to say below.

Seems like they both are taking sides, and since Kanye said he would do ANY and EVERYTHING for Rihanna maybe he can whoop Chris for her!!!

Chris Brown Prosecution Assisted by Rihanna

February 10, 2009 Leave a comment

R&B star Rihanna is cooperating with investigators building a domestic violence case against her boyfriend, the singer Chris Brown, a police source said Monday.
The source said the 20-year-old performer, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, was providing "ongoing" cooperation to detectives who booked Brown on Sunday on suspicion of making criminal threats against her.

An early morning altercation with Brown after a pre-Grammy Awards party left Rihanna with bruises and a scratch on her face, according to police sources. She was treated at a "major medical facility," a police source said.
Brown, 19, has a double-platinum record and dance moves often compared to Michael Jackson’s. He fled before officers arrived, police said.
He remained free on $50,000 bail, but neither he nor his attorney would speak about allegations that rocked the Grammys ceremony. Brown and Rihanna were both nominated; neither attended the ceremony.

The fight occurred after midnight on a quiet block in Hancock Park, where Brown had stopped a rented Lamborghini he was driving. According to police, several people saw or heard a loud, violent confrontation. The luxury car was impounded because the alleged assault may have begun in the vehicle, a police source said.

Report: Usher Going to Miss the Grammies

February 10, 2009 Leave a comment

Seems like there are going to be a few big time artist missing from this years Grammys. Chris Brown won’t be in attendance because of his investigation, Rihanna won’t be either, and now it looks like Usher won’t be. Usher canceled his performance at Clive Davis’s Annual Pre-Grammy party due to a "family emergency", which involved his wife Tameka. It has been reported that Tameka is experiencing complication from her recent plastic surgery, but these reports haven’t been confirmed. Now I usually don’t have anything nice to say about her but I hope she has a safe and speedy recovery.

Your Black Doctors: Dr. Ben Carson Gets a New Movie

February 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Dr. Carson

TNT’s "Gifted Hands" is one of those longform projects that has Emmy written all over it.

It boasts near-flawless direction from Thomas Carter, a vivid teleplay adaptation by John Pielmeier and uniformly magnificent performances, particularly from star Cuba Gooding Jr., who puts himself back onto the Hollywood map here in a way he hasn’t since his Oscar-winning turn in 1996’s "Jerry Maguire."

Gooding portrays the real-life world-renowned brain surgeon Benjamin Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and author of a best-selling 1990 autobiography.

It’s taken nearly two decades to get Carson’s inspiring story to the screen, but Gooding does him more than proud with a portrayal at once sensitively wrought and quietly moving.

In lesser hands (if you’ll pardon the pun), this biopic could easily have drifted off into maudlin sap, but Gooding keeps the character of Carson centered and human and the film honoring him wise and surprisingly graphic. (The surgical procedures are showcased in all of their bloody glory, but not so much as to cross the line to gratuitousness.)

Lady Drama: Etta James Goes Off on Beyonce Over Inauguration Performance

February 5, 2009 1 comment

Seems that everyone didn’t like Beyonce’s performance of "At Last" for the Obama’s on inauguration night. The original singer of the song,Etta James, had some harsh words for Beyonce, and even threatened her. During a performance in Seattle Etta told the audience,
"You know, YOUR President, the one with the big ears-he ain’t MY President–had that woman singing for him at his Inauguration. She’s going to get her ass whooped….Beyonce…I can’t stand Beyonce."

DAMN, she was going hard on Obama too. What is she so mad for???

Lady Drama: Biggie’s Mama Tells Lil Kim to "Sit Down"

February 1, 2009 1 comment

I guess Voletta Wallace is getting fed up, just like the rest of us, with all the drama surrounding her son’s biopic “Notorious”. In a recent interview with Hip-Hop Weekly Ms. Wallace puts Lil’ Kim on blast and let’s her know how she really feels.
Read what she had to say below:
“She felt the character we chose for her was ‘too dark,’ ” Wallace said. “Do you know why the character was too dark for her? Because she’s a white woman trapped in a black woman’s body, and you can tell the world I said it, because those are Lil’ Kim’s words. She should be ashamed of herself.”

“Tell Lil’ Kim to go find herself, go drink a cup of green tea and get a life!” Wallace went on. “This movie is not about Lil’ Kim. She felt we used her character to promote [but] this movie is about my son. … Lil’ Kim needs to go sit down.”
I am starting to feel sorry for Kim b/c it seems like everyone is ganging up on her, first Charli B. and now Ms. Wallace.

Your Black Sports: Michael Vick Could be in a Halfway House "Any Day"

February 1, 2009 Leave a comment

A lawyer for Michael Vick told a federal bankruptcy judge Friday that the imprisoned NFL star could be transferred to a halfway house in Virginia any day.

The judge presiding over Vick’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case asked about the transfer during a hearing at which he also approved procedures to sell some of the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback’s property.

“He’s in the process of being released to the halfway house,” attorney Paul Campsen told Judge Frank Santoro. “We expect it to occur any day.”

But the U.S. Bureau of Prisons has not given Vick’s attorneys a specific date for the move, which Campsen said could occur with only “a day or so” notice.

Vick is serving a 23-month sentence at the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy. He is scheduled for release July 20 but could serve the last few months of his term at a halfway house in Newport News, his hometown.

“We believe he is ultimately going to be reinstated by the NFL,” said another Vick bankruptcy attorney, Michael Blumenthal.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not said whether he will lift Vick’s suspension after his release. Vick once was the league’s highest-paid player before his indictment and guilty plea left both his finances and his reputation in tatters. He filed for bankruptcy protection in July, claiming assets of $16 million and liabilities of $20.4 million.

Busta Rhymes Gets Heat for Insulting Arabs

January 31, 2009 Leave a comment

The video for Busta Rhymes’ “Arab Money” is now officially available online.

Yes, I know it’s been on BET and YouTube for months.

Of course the BET version was always official. The other, not so much.

I raise this point because when I contacted Universal Records in November to get a copy of the video for Yahoo! Music, Busta was in the midst of controversy over the song which offended Muslims in the US and UK for misrepresenting the Middle Eastern culture, mixing sacred verses from the Holy Quran with secular hip-hop beats and rhetoric. I was told that the video was not being serviced at the time.

Over the last month, blogs addressed the controversy and Busta was even quoted in a few, expressing his sincere apology to those he offended.

There was so much outrage in the UK that popular Galaxy FM DJ Steve “Smooth” Sutherland was suspended after listeners complained about him playing the song.

A Dubai-based rapper Narcicyst got Busta’s attention when he released his explosive response record “Real Arab Money” that opens calling Busta’s version racist, claiming that the celebrated veteran rapper had not done his research and was even pronouncing Arab incorrectly.

In “Real Arab Money” the 26-year-old rapper said that pronouncing Arab as Ay-rab is the equivalent of calling an African-American the n-word. While Busta’s song compares his hip-hop lifestyle to that of Arabian royalty, Narcicyst stressed that the analogy is off base because all Arabs are not rich.

Lady Drama: Lisa Raye’s Confessions to Essence

January 29, 2009 Leave a comment
These are Her Confessions…

I don’t know if Lisa Raye was having a guilty conscience or just wanted to set the record straight, but she sure did have a lot to tell during her recent interview with Essence.com. From her childhood to her current divorce, she lets it ALL out.

Check out some of the things she had to say below:

ESSENCE.COM: Is it difficult to go through rough times publicly, especially with a spouse.

LISARAYE: Yes. There is a law in Turks and Caicos that you must remain married for three years before you begin any kind ofdivorce proceedings. If you want to get a divorce before that you have to be able to prove certain things that will grant you the right to do so.
ESSENCE.COM: What evidence did you provide that helped you in your case?
LISARAYE: I can’t be specific right now. I will say that there are things that happen within a marriage which can disrespect the union and actions can be taken against those things. As an actress, I have put myself out there as an independent Black woman, a single mom, a go-getter, a hustler who isn’t afraid to survive. If you get with a man who goes against who you are or what you believe in, people who know you begin to say, “Hey, that’s not the LisaRaye I know.” As his wife, my name has been associated with things that I have nothing to do with, and I have to fight to clear my name.
ESSENCE.COM: Do you think that you and your husband could have avoided such a public war?
LISARAYE: Honestly, I hoped our divorce could be amicable. I’m saying to him, “Let’s get it over with so we can move on with our lives. It’s not fair to keep me involved in all this mess that I know nothing about… I’m human and enough is enough.” I’m going through some things, but I’ve been quiet and haven’t spoken to my country. I was trying to bow out gracefully, but after a while the Southside [of Chicago] had to come forward and finally say, “Hold on! Wait a minute!”
ESSENCE.COM: Many balked at your whirlwind romance and marriage and accused you of being an opportunist. How do you feel about that assessment of your character?

LISARAYE: First of all, I’m a fan of love and partnership. I would say this to my critics: If a man comes to you there obviously has to be a connection. I had a man who’s smart and powerful and who I fell in love with. He’s embracing my family. Add the fact that I have an opportunity to bring tourism to his country and be involved in something historical. Who in the hell would say no? But what scared me was the idea of being First Lady?
ESSENCE.COM: Bloggers have often said that you’re too “ghetto” to be a First Lady. How does that make you feel?

LISARAYE: I am not and never grew up in the ghetto. People need to get it right. I grew up on the Southside of Chicago. What people don’t realize is that my father was a multimillionaire who owned 12 hotels, motels, a steel mill, a radio station, a club, nursing home, and a law office. So I think it’s safe to say I’m a little above middle class and I’m a daddy’s girl. I make no apologies for loving the finer things in life or the men I choose to date. I don’t feel bad about the person I am. Now, I do have an edge, rawness and realness, and I can tell you I’m going to keep that. I’m one of those women who’s not to be messed with. I’m very opinionated and boisterous at times. I’m also kind and humble. I know when to fold and when to hold and that’s important. If my edge scares you, then you have a choice to remove yourself. Other than that, I’m very approachable, and when people meet me they always say, “You are so down to earth and nothing like I thought you were.”

Young Jeezy Goes Off on Bill O’Reilly

January 27, 2009 2 comments

As you may remember Conservative dummy Bill O’Reilly was b*tching about rappers Jay-Z and Young Jezzy calling them “low class”, because of their negative comments about former President George W. Bush. Now Jezzy has responded, and he definitely came hard.

Read what Jeezy told XXLMag.com below:

“Damn right! I ain’t never ran, nah mean?At the end of the day, you’re dealing with cats who think that we as young black men don’t know what it is we do. We entrepreneurs, we came from nothing. If you gotta mispronounce my name to try to be funny and you got a Harvard or whatever education you got, then you’re really showing how ignorant you are.”

“If you didn’t hear what the f*ck I said, it’s all good, but you didn’t hear all these people crying in New Orleans. You ain’t know bout the [Oscar] Grant kid that got killed in Oakland, you ain’t speaking on that. You ain’t talking about these ladies out here killing these babies, you worried about what I said.”

Your Black Celebrities: Lil Kim Livid Over "Notorious"

January 24, 2009 Leave a comment

Lil’ Kim finally went to go see “Notorious”, and as expected she was not pleased. Prior to the release of the film Kim expressed her dislike of her portrayal in the film, but now she is even more outraged.

“I feel like I was not portrayed how I should have been in this movie. I was in love with BIG and he was in love with me. I was never a JUMP-OFF, I know this and BIG knew this. I wasn’t even able to choose who I wanted to portray me in this movie. I would have never picked Naturi, she doesn’t have a Lil Kim aura at all! She looks nothing like I looked back then. We have NO similarities. Watching her on-screen was so “dreadful” as Simon Cowell would say. She is tasteless and talentless. Never once did she contact me for input or to get a feel of me for the character. A “TRUE” actress would contact the source to be the best they can be in portaying someone. That told me right there, she wasn’t right for the part and not to mention, Naturi has got to be one of THE worst actresses I’ve ever seen and I can’t believe they chose her. I really can’t!”

Seems to me that Kim needs to except the fact that she was indeed B.I.G’.s jumpoff, but I guess it’s true what they say THE TRUTH HURTS.

Your Black Hip Hop: Bad Boy Rapper Writes Nasty Tell-All Book About Diddy

January 24, 2009 1 comment

According to ThisIs50.com,former Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry is releasing a tell-all book about his time at Bad Boy. In the book, titled Dancing With the Devil, Curry speaks on Diddy’s penchant for stealing artists’ shine and charge them strange fees.

Puff has an annoying habit of inserting himself into the songs and videos of all the artists on his label and its common knowledge that many Bad Boy acts resented him for this,” writes Curry. “Asked about his practice in the July 1995 issue of a magazine aimed at black teenagers, Puff said: ‘I like performing with my artists. I like talking on the records and I like being in the videos. It protects my interests in terms of what I’m going to do in the future. Say if a company tries to remove me. It’s going to be hard to remove me and still have my acts and [have] the same level of intensity and the same flavour and feeling’.”

Puff charged the artists for his appearance on their records and videos, usually without [them] realizing it until they receive their royalty statements,” wrote the rapper, who was known for his appearance on the hit “Bad Boy for Life.” “That’s when they discovered that their large sums of money had gone to fees which were doubled, tripled and even quadrupled because of Puff’s ‘special appearances.’ He charged artists, for example, for having his Bentley in his videos-which he insisted upon- then took tax credit for business use of a car.”

January 23, 2009 Leave a comment

Singer Mashonda set the record straight letting it be known that A. Keys in fact was the reason behind the divorce from her hubby Swizz Beats. Mashonda told Angela Lee of Shade 45’s Lip Service Radio, that she began to notice a change in Swizz’s attitude causing her to look through his hotel receipts. The receipts she found matched up with the times he was on tour with Alicia convincing her he was cheating with her.
Check out the convo below:
Who would of ever thought that A. Keys was a homewrecker. Well I can’t wait to hear her side of the story, hopefully she will clear her name. Plus Alicia already has a man, why does she need to go stealing Swizz???…Especially since he ain’t cute…HMM

Young Jeezy and Jay-Z perform in Washington, D.C., on Sunday

All hail the chief! Young Jeezy made immediate impact his first night in D.C.: Jeezy debuted a remix of the hip-hop national anthem right now, “My President.” Not too long after T.I. performed at D.C. club Love, the Snowman took to the stage for his “Presidential Status” inaugural ball — and his guest on the new version of “My President” was Jay-Z.

“My president is black, he’s black, he’s half white/ So even in a racist mind, he’s half right/ So if you got a racist mind, it’s alright/ My president is black, but his house is all white,” Jay spit a capella as the DJ pulled the music for his verse.

“No more white lies, my president is black!” Hov finished, as the crowd in the club repeated his last line over and over again.

Among the messages in Hov’s rap was fidelity — we’ll see if Jeezy returns the favor and comes out during Hov’s “Concert on the Eve of Change” in D.C. on Monday night (January 19)!

As for the new video of the song, which debuted over the weekend, it’s reminiscent of Public Enemy‘s “Fight the Power,” in which the whole community comes out for a common cause. Besides Nas, who raps on the record, Bow Wow, Bun B, DJ Greg Street and Jeezy’s artist Roccett make cameos.

Your Black Sports: Michael Irvin of Dallas Cowboys Says Would-be Carjackers Recognized Him

January 18, 2009 Leave a comment

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin says he recently avoided a carjacking because his would-be robbers recognized him.

From NBCDFW.com:

Michael Irvin said he was driving to the gym when robbers pulled alongside him and flashed a gun at him along Marsh Lane near the Bush turnpike at about 9 p.m.

Irvin, who was driving a new, white Range Rover, said a truck followed him to a stoplight.

“I was looking in my rearview, and I saw this black truck flying up behind me,” he said.

The passenger rolled down his window and pointed a gun at him. Irvin said his work on the field may have saved his life — because the would-be carjacker recognized him.

“He put it away, because he recognized me. He said, ‘Hey, Mike Irvin, what’s up? Mike Irving, man, we are big Cowboy fans,'” Irvin said.

So I guess Pacman Jones is back in Dallas?

Lady Drama – Your Black Gossip

With the Real Housewives of Atlanta set to comeback for a second season, its going to be filled with more cat fights and drama than before! This time more so, because the network hasn’t asked Deshawn Snow to come back for the second season! Instead I hear the network has been in talks with Tameeka Foster (No I will not tag Raymond on the end of that I’m still in denial over that marriage) to join the cast.
Also I hear Sheree wont be showcasing her line at Fashion Week this year so once again she fails. When will she learn to just accept her role as a gold digger, raise her kids and bow out gracefully! Just because you can put an outfit together for lunch with the gals doesn’t mean that you can launch a line! Some chicks are dumb as cat litter and think just because they marry into money they can conquer the world… Ho sit down 😦

Your Black Celebrities: Kanye Says He Wants to Pose Naked

January 14, 2009 Leave a comment

In the new issue of Vibe magazine, Kanye West says he would love to have less fans – more like a core of 20,000 devotees rather than a mass of 100,000 fly-by-night bandwagon followers. Kanye also says;
It’s like Björk. If she wanted to pose naked, you’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s Björk.’ But if I wanted to pose naked, people would draw all type of things into it. I definitely feel like, in the next however many years, if I work out for two months, that I’ll pose naked. I break every rule and mentality of hip-hop, of black culture, of American culture.”

January 14, 2009 Leave a comment

Whether spelling his name Eddy Curry or Eddie Curry, folks across the Internet are searching for the latest details on the New York Knicks star’s new legal trouble (and his is name is spelled “Eddy”, for the record).

Curry, a center for the Knicks, is being accused by a former limo driver of not paying owed money, sexually harassing him and berating him with racist slurs. In other words, Curry’s apparently been a busy boy.

The New York Post had more:

The stunning court papers claim Eddy Curry, a married father of three, repeatedly approached chauffeur David Kuchinsky “in the nude,” allegedly telling him, “Look at me, Dave, look” and “Come and touch it, Dave.”

It gets worse.

Curry also made Kuchinsky perform “humiliating tasks outside the scope of his employment, such as cleaning up and removing dirty towels [Curry had ejaculated into] so that his wife would not see them,” the Manhattan federal court suit says.
