Radical, yes, provocative, yes, charismatic, yes, intelligent, yes but most of all a man of God. For years I saw him on television marching and singing but never preaching. Have I got a story to tell. About five years ago I journeyed to Mount Bayou Mississippi the Oldest Black Settlement in the United States to hear Reverend Al Sharpton Speak and document the event as a photographer. Congressman Benny Thompson, Sentator Willie Simmons, Mayor Kennedy Johnson all were on hand to listen and participate in Mound Bayou’s Founders Day Celebration.

Reverend Al sat in the Pulpit area meditating. On occasion he would lean over, he and Congressman Thompson would share a few words in private. The town Historian Mr Milfred Crow who has gone on now, gave a introduction to top all others. The African Drum Corps started Playing African Rythems as Reverend Al stood up and took to the podium. Whoop Whoop Whoop then he went into his presentation. I find it Ironic that his topic of disscution included Black Students at Harvard University, the same University our Commander and Cheif Graduated from.

Reverend Sharpton spoke of his childhood and how he found the lord before he was ten years old. Reverend Sharpton spoke of how his mother worked hard to educate him and how strong the bond between them was. Family values laced with references from the bible was presented in away that made everyone listening take a serious look at how they been handling their business when it comes to their families.

Most importantly he wanted to reach our young people. He reminded them of not to long ago that the choices in life for them in this country was limited. He reminded them of the sacrafices people of all races made so that they could choose where they wanted to be educated, the right to choose the career field of their choice, the ability to live where they wanted to live, the right to public accomidations, the right to vote and a host of other rights we were denied by law.

Then he dropped a bomb shell. Why is it that our best and brightest are dropping out of Harvard University, he asked the audiance. Why are our best and brightest getting high before going to class and why are they cheating when they don’t have to. It’s appauling that we marched, bled and died for you to sit at the table in places like Harvard and this is how you repay us. They audiance was under Reverend Al’s spell now. The Reverend lit into everyone in the church when he talked about how we take for granted the oppertunities available to us and how we dismiss the struggle that it took for us to abtain our rights as citizens.

That day I made some resolutions, some I broke and some I’ve kept. I will never forget the Master Preacher, Master Showman, Educator, Philosopher and a man I consider a friend and don’t even know him.

He will be find in what ever hour the network places him in. For the network to get the best results Put Brother Al on the tube when everyone is watching.

He will be fine in what ever hour the network places him in. For the network to get the best results Put Brother Al on the tube when everyone is watching.
