President Obama’s Approval Rating Jumps 11 Percent

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

Life is good in the White House this week, as a recent CBS/New York Times poll shows that President Obama’s approval rating jumped a startling 11 points this month. As of this week, 57 percent of Americans say they approve of the way President Obama is handling his job, a stark increase from the 46 percent number just one month ago.

There are two elephants in the room which caused the president’s sudden increase in popularity. The first was the surprising series of attacks from Donald Trump, which led to even moderate members of the media referring to Trump as a racist. The second was the president’s recent killing of Osama bin Laden, ending a 10-year chase to find the man believed to have masterminded the attacks on September 11, 2001.

Even Rush Limbaugh said, “Thank God for President Obama,” as Obama’s political enemies had to acknowledge a job well done. When your enemies are praising you (even reluctantly) and moderates are defending you, that usually implies you’re in good shape in the polls.

One sour point for the president, however, is that most Americans do not approve of the way he is handling the economy. Only 34 percent of Americans approve of the way President Obama is managing the economic situation in America right now, and 55 percent say they disapprove.

The president’s biggest problem as it pertains to his economic performance is that the economic recovery, thus far, has been a jobless one. During the last 20 years, reduced regulation on corporate America and a decline in the power of labor unions have led to much of our nation’s prosperity going to the wealthiest Americans. Additionally, the Bush Tax cuts in 2001 reduced government revenue significantly, leading to a long series of massive budget deficits that are threatening the financial stability of the federal government.

What makes matters worse is that trickle-down economics (tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations) is even less effective in a nation where jobs can be easily shipped overseas. Cutting corporate tax rates increases shareholder profitability, but doesn’t trickle down to American workers in the manner that it would in a fairly-regulated corporate environment. That’s one reason that men and women on Wall Street have enjoyed a beautiful economic recovery, while the average American worker continues to suffer.

In the “economic basement” of America lies the black community, where unemployment rates are nearly double those for white Americans. In spite of the massive popularity enjoyed by the Obama Administration, millions of African Americans suffer quietly, while being comforted by images of a black couple sitting in the Oval Office. What will be interesting to see is whether or not these disenfranchised Americans will feel inspired to return to the polls for Obama’s reelection in 2012.

Many black people vote in the same way we listen to music: Our love for our favorite artist may not translate into record sales, since we can listen to our artists for free on the Internet. In other words, massive black support for President Obama may not translate into votes if black folks don’t believe that voting for Obama will serve to reduce their suffering. The same way that purchasing music costs money, taking a day off of work to go to the polls is costly as well. If African Americans are not convinced that having a black president will make a real difference in their lives, black folks may just support the Obamas from the sidelines.

I truly believe that Obama’s legacy will be more than most anticipate. He was a grassroots fighter of equality in the beginning and now he is the President. I has only been 3 years and he has had a lot of pressing issues. As bad as the economy is, it is historically harder on us always. It is not a suprise, that if 1 white person in poor there are 1000 black people who are worse off. Has someone else been in office would there be a difference in the numbers? I don’t think so. I think that he will get back to his true passion of helping the poor and fighting injustice in his second term and that will define his legacy. Had he tried to advance this agenda in this his first term, I don’t care if he had killed Bin-laden with his own pistol, he would never have gotten a second chance. I will be at the poles with Obama socks on under my boots!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not have said it better Tracey. You have have expressed my sentiments exactly. How soon people forget that President Obama walked into a royal mess. It has few person willing to concede any little bit to allow him to clean up. Others before have been allowed mistakes, why does his every move have to caliculated to perfection. The man is a man first, we all fall short. God bless the Obamas and our country.

I read rush’s comment. He was speaking sarcastically. He like a lot of racist with a Mic and a camera thinks all credit should go to Bush.
This president has the hardest job in the world. He has to convince himself and the world that he leads the free world. But we all know that he will never be respected for his intellect or the job he does because he’s black. Black America is looking for a savior and white America looking to lynch him politically and even physically. The things that are wrong with America have been wrong since its conception.

I think that President Obama is doing an awesomw job, considering the hand that he was dealt and the opposition he is facing. Sure, we would all like to experience prosperity now. However, we have come this far by faith and we can not turn back now. Like a locomotive it starts off slow and picks up speed and I pray that we are all onboard. “People get ready there is a train a comin.” Remember me must be careful of the message we are sending our children, particularly our male children who grow up to be men. We must maintain our patience and persevere. I too, am struggling. I lost my job before President Obama took office. I am working part time. I trust in God and believe that He put President Obama in office to full His purpose and it shall be done. He has my full support at the polls. I believe that a change is gonna come! The wheels are moving in the right direction, forward.

    DR BOYCE,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME SHAPE A POLITICAL ATTITUDE THAT IS INDEED POLITICAL.
POLITICS ARE A REAlITY IN US AMERICA. FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE BEING ELIGIBLE TO VOTE, I ACTUALLY TOOKART IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS-BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD AND PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. I HAD GOTTEN SO SICK OF SETTLING FOR WHITE MEN AS PRESIDENTS OF SUCH A RACIALLY AND CULTURALLY DIVERSED
NATION. IT JUST DID NOT MAKE ANY SENSE THAT ONLY WHITE MEN COULD RUN AND GET ELECTED TO THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT. MR OBAMA PUT AN END TO THAT MYTH FOREVER. I SHALL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR HIS DECISION TO RUN FOR THE PRESIDENCY. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR ALL OF US TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE THE IMBALANCE WE HAVE HERE IN AMERICA. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG IN A SOCIETY WHERE PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK THAT A WHITE BOY HAS A CORNER ON TALENT, INTELLECT, CHARACTER, EXPERIENCE THAT NO OTHER RACE HAS. DO THEY ACTUALLY THINK THAT THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE-THE ALL GUIDING CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE OF THE UNIVERSE GAVE TO A WHITE BOY SOMETHING OR BETTER THAN HE GAVE TO A BLACK MAN? THIS IS A RIDICULOUS ASSERTION-EVEN FOR DUMMIES LIKE TRUMP, LIMBAUGH, OREILLY AND THE MANY OTHER SICK AND SUFFERING WHITES WHO POWERLESSLY LABOR UNDER THE DELUSION THAT THEY ARE HUAMINTSUPERIOR BEINGS. THIS JUST AINT HAPPENING. I FEEL INSULTED WHEN I THINK MY INTELLIGENCE OR ANYTHING ELSE IS MEASURED BY A WHITE BASELINE. TO ME, THIS IS PITIFUL AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE DEMORALIZATION. I HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON WITH WHITES. WE ARE BOTH CONSIDERED HUMAN BEINGS. THAT IS WHAT MAKES US EVEN AND EQUAL.
BUT WHEN ONE THINKS OF A SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN RELATIONS TO RACE IN AMERICA-ONE MUST BE TRUTHFUL AND HONEST WITH ONESELF AND DETERMINE THAT THE VERDICT IS STILL OUT WHEN ONE TRIES TO MEASURE THE HUMANITY OF WHITE MEN. IT TAKES BARBARIANS TO DO WHAT THEY TRIED TO DO; EVENTHOUGH THEY FAILED. TO EVEN ATTEMPT SUCH A THING TAKES AN ABSENCE OF MIND AND SPIRIT, AND DOWNRIGHT STUPIDITY. WITHOUT KNOWING IT, THESE PEOPLE NEED A RESCUE-AS THEY ARE ON A COURSE OF SELD-DESTRUCTION. AND IF WE DO NOT DETACH FROM THEIR SYSTEM OF STUPIDITY, WE WILL GO DOWN WITH THEM. FOR ME, THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY IS THE NEXT STEP IN FULL DETACHMENT FROM TRADITIONS AND PRACTICES THAT JUST DO NOT HAVE A PLACE IN MODERN AMERICAN SOCIETY. IT JUST DOESN’T. IT IS OVER. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY HUMAN HISTORY THE USA AS WELL AS THE WHOLE WORLD HAS BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE A TRUE
MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE. TO HEAR A MAN WITH FULL COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING SPEAK. TO HEAR SOMEONE WITH SOUND REASONING AND BENEVOLENCE. TO HEAR WHAT IT IS LIKE TO HAVE A LOVE AND TOLERANCE

FOR ALL. THIS IS QUITE REFRESHING AND PIVOTABLE IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN HISTORY. I HAVE BEEN MADE FREE OF THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL SHACKLES I HAVE LABORED UNDER IN THIS COUNTRY FOR SO MANY YEARS.
I CAME FULL CIRCLE WITH THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY. I AM WHOLE ANSD COMPLETE. I SAY THIS BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER FELT THESE THINGS BEFORE NOW. I HAVE BEEN TOTALLY LIBERATED FROM THE BONDS OF WHITE SUPREMACY ON A NATIONAL AND UNIVERSAL LEVEL. THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT IF WE WERE TO BE REALLY HONEST WITH OURSELVES, WE WOULD ADMIT THAT THE OBAMA WHITE HOUSE HAS GIVEN US A FULL DEMORCRACY-A REAL FEDERAL REPUBLIC-WITH NO COMPROMISE-AND NO SICK SENSE OF INDEBTEDNESS.
MR. OBAMA IS A MAN FALLABLE LIKE US ALL. BUT FOR ME HE IS A SYMBOL OF WHAT IS RIGHT AND GOOD IN AMERICA. AND WHAT IT COULD BE-WERE WE TO BE GRATEFUL FOR THIS EXAMPLE OF COURAGE AND DIGNITY THAT WE HAVE BEEN STRIPPED OF FOR CENTURIES. THAT WHITE BOY IS KNOWN FOR TAKING AWAY ONE’S DIGNITY-BUT IT IS MR. OBAMA WHO HAS RESTORED ME TO A PLACE OF DIGNITY AND HUMILITY-AND I AM VERY VERY GRATEFUL.
ANOTHER THING I HAVE LEARNED HERE IS THAT ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS IS MY RIGHT, DUTY, AND RESPONSIBLITY. I NEED TO BE FULLY CONNECTED TO THE LAW-LEGISLATIVE AND JUDICIAL TO BE A WHOLE AND FUNCTIONING MEMBER OF SOCIETY. THIS IS NOT A CHOICE. IT IS A PRESSURE. BECAUSE WHEN I DON’T THEY WILL, AND THEY WILL CUT MY THROAT, BEFORE THEY WILL DO SOMETHING THAT IS FAIR JUST AND HONEST. THIS IS THE REALITY. IT IS NOT MY MAKING. THIS IS SOMETHING I LIVE WITH AND MUST DEAL WITH DAILY. I MUST KNOW LAW. TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAW AS IT RELATES TO MY EVERTDAY DEALINGS IN THIS SOCIETY. I HAVE BEEN SO PASSIVE, UNASSUMING, INACTIVE, NONCHALANT, CARELESS, AND
DEPENDENT THAT I FAILED TO ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN SOMETHING THAT IMPACTS MY LIFE NEGATIVELY OR POSITIVELY-AND THAT I AM LEAVING IN THE HANDS OF OTHERS WHO HAVE NO CAPACITY FOR UPRIGHTNESS.
THESE ARE THE THINGS I HAVE BEEN GIVEN AS A RESULT OF THIS PRESIDENT’S PRESENCE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS FROM HERE ON IN, I WILL NEVER HAVE TO FEEL AS DISCONNECTED AS I DID BEFORE MR. OBAMA AND MICHELLE AND THE GIRLS. WOMEN OF ALL AGES, ETHNICITIES ARE GIVEN A NEW MODEL OF THE AMERICA WOMAN. AND IT IS WORKING. THANK YOU-MICHELLE.
SO I AM VERY GLAD FOR THE RELIEF THAT WE RECEIVE WITH THE NEWS OF HIS APPROVAL RATING. PERFORMANCE RATINGS ARE IMPORTANT AND IS A PART OF OUT CULTURE-SO GETTING APPROVAL FROM ALL OD US IS ENCOURAGING, SUPPORTIVE AND WELCOMED.
