paulsonLawless Capital, Rushing to Armageddon
A Black Agenda Radio commentary
By: Glen Ford

The fundamental law of capital – the system’s need to extract by any means possible ever increasing returns on investment, or die – brought the world to the current catastrophe. Inevitably, despite all the noise about the need for transparency and tightening of regulations on the behavior of capital, the system’s response to its crisis is to descend into even greater depths of lawlessness.

The frenzy of unchecked illegality pulsates outward from the chaotic center of crisis and criminality: Wall Street, which has succeeded in establishing a kind of privatized martial law economic regime in the waning months of the Bush kleptocracy. The $700 billion “bailout” is revealed as a brazen bait-and-switch bamboozlement, in which Goldman Sachs Family Don Hank Paulson, under color-of-law as Treasury Secretary, ignores the terms of congressional legislation to dispense mountains of public wealth to his bankster friends as he sees fit. In return for their cut of the loot, the banking mafia give the public – nothing! No recycling of the billions into loans to small business or college-bound students or any of the intended beneficiaries. [...]

If there is one person who possesses the moral capital to demand an accounting from the conspirators, it is Barack Obama [...]

Your Black News: Michigan Police Accused Of Beating Diabetic Man Into Coma

September 24, 2008 2 comments

Pamela Griglen rushed into the hospital that June evening to be at the side of her bloodied, bandaged, diabetic husband.

At first, she thought Ernest Griglen Jr. of Detroit had been in a car accident.

“He said that they beat him,” Pamela Griglen said Monday at a news conference, where she accused Allen Park and Dearborn police of mistaking her 59-year-old husband for a drunken driver during a hypoglycemic attack on June 15, then beating him to the point that part of his brain had to be surgically removed.

The couple’s attorney, Arnold Reed, filed a lawsuit Monday in Detroit’s U.S. District Court against the two police departments and five officers, seeking $20 million in damages.

But Allen Park and Dearborn police reports released Monday to the Free Press under a Freedom of Information Act request give a different version of what happened.

Police said they had to take a combative Ernest Griglen to the ground after he resisted being handcuffed following an earlier 5-mile car chase on Southfield Road.

In a report, Dearborn police acknowledge striking Griglen at least four times in an attempt to free his hands after seeing what one officer described as a black object and possible weapon on Griglen’s waistband, and one officer hit him with pepper spray…

Your Black News: Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick Will Resign Immediately

September 4, 2008 Leave a comment

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to felony charges Thursday in a sex scandal and will step down after months of defiantly holding onto his job leading the nation’s 11th-largest city. He was ordered jailed for four months and fined $1 million.

The plea deal brings to an end a seven-months-long ordeal that led to felony charges against Kilpatrick and plunged the city, region and state into political chaos.

“I lied under oath,” Kilpatrick said in court.

As part of the deal, the 38-year-old Democrat is to serve four months in jail and five years of probation. He also would pay the $1 million in restitution over the five-year probationary period.

During a separate hearing moments after Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner accepted the mayor’s plea, Kilpatrick offered a no contest plea in an assault case.

The judge also accepted that plea, which called for Kilpatrick to serve a four-month jail sentence that would run at the same time.

Kilpatrick had faced 10 felony counts in the two separate criminal cases.

Groner asked Kilpatrick if he understood he was giving up the right to be innocent until proven guilty.

“I gave that up a long time ago,” Kilpatrick replied.

Kilpatrick also read a statement in court and admitted his guilt, saying “I lied under oath … I did so with an intent to mislead the court and jury and to impede and obstruct the fair administration of justice.”

The married mayor and former top aide Christine Beatty were charged in March with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. They’re accused of lying under oath about an affair and their roles in the firing of a deputy police chief.

Beatty did not plead guilty and next will appear in court on Sept. 11. Groner said a plea deal in Beatty’s case appeared likely…
