Michelle Obama Gets into it with PETA
No strangers to controversy, the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is up to its old tricks again. This time they’ve raised eyebrows by using an image of Michelle Obama in an anti-fur advertisement without her permission. The White House is not pleased, to say the least.
The ad in question features the image of the first lady alongside the images of Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, and Carrie Underwood underneath the slogan, "Fur-free and fabulous!" The ads, which PETA says features "a bevy of the smartest, most stylish, and most influential women in America," are being plastered all over the Washington D.C. Metro mass transit system, in addition to appearing in various magazines and websites.
While Winfrey, Banks and Underwood are all on record as publicly endorsing PETA’s anti-fur efforts, first lady Michelle Obama cannot endorse special interest groups such as PETA. Thus, the White House is mildly perturbed by the use of the first lady’s image in the campaign
Your News: Gilbert Arenas is in Serious Trouble
The investigation of Gilbert Arenas and the guns he brought to the Verizon Center took a more serious turn Friday amid a report that the Wizards guard and teammate Javaris Crittenton allegedly drew on each other during a locker-room argument over a gambling debt.
Arenas responded with a flurry of messages on Twitter, at times making light of the news but also making one tweet that read somewhat like a denial: "I understand this is serious..but if u ever met me you know i dont do serious things im a goof ball this story today dont sound goofy to me."
The NBA and the Wizards would only confirm that an investigation is taking place — and it’s being led by law enforcement, not the league. The capital has some of the most strict gun laws in the nation.
The Wizards and Arenas both have acknowledged that Arenas kept guns in his locker. Arenas has said he took his unloaded guns to the Verizon Center because he didn’t want them in his house after the birth of his latest child.
Black News: The Secret Rules of Athlete Mistresses
The woman who killed former NFL MVP Steve McNair made a fatal mistake when she got involved with him, according to athletes’ groupies—she fell in love.
As soon as I heard Steve McNair got offed by his mistress, Saleh Kazemi, I couldn’t help but wonder: Jeez, didn’t this girl know the rules? Among pro athletes and those who love them, Groupie Rules are so entrenched that legions of spandexed women manage to abide by them on a regular basis and no one ever gets killed. In fact, if you look at the statistics—as CNN solemnly reported in the wake of the McNair murder-suicide, “80 to 90 percent” of pro athletes cheat (presumably the other 10 to 20 percent are recovering from groin injuries)—and factor in the jealousy and money involved, you might be amazed no one ever got murder-suicided before. But as with any evolved society, there’s a reason for that: there are rules. And as I discovered during an extended visit into their world, the good groupies know them.
Rule # 1: You do not fall in love. EVER. Unless you are Eva Longoria. And even then….
News: Chris Henry Dead
Cincinnati Bengals’ wide receiver Chris Henry died in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital this morning, after falling out the back of a pickup truck on Wednesday.
According to police, a dispute between Henry and his fiancé occurred at his home around noon on Wednesday. The dispute then moved outside with Henry’s fiancé driving away in a truck and Henry jumping in the back of the truck. Somehow, Henry fell out of the back of the truck and was found on the side of the road "suffering from life-threatening injuries," according to police.
As Henry battled for his life on Wednesday, agent Andy Simms said:
We ask everyone to pray for Chris. We also ask that you respect the privacy of Chris’ family. Chris is indeed battling for his life tonight, and our thoughts and prayers [are]with him during this extremely difficult time.
Black News: Remember Lisa Nicole Carson?
Finally out on DVD is the first season of ‘Ally McBeal,’ which ran on the FOX network from 1997 to 2002. The series starred Calista Flockhart in the title role as a young lawyer working in a fictional Boston law firm with other young lawyers whose lives and loves were eccentric, humorous and dramatic.
Among the supporting cast were Greg Germann, Jane Krakowski, Peter MacNicol,Vonda Shepard, and Lisa Nicole Carson.
Carson was a rising starlet in the mid-’90s, appearing in ‘Jason’s Lyric,’ ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ and ‘Love Jones’ before settling in on two highly successful television shows.
The Brooklyn native played Ally’s friend and fellow defense attorney Renée Raddick from 1997 to 2002 (seasons 1–4) and made a guest appearance in the series finale. She also played Carla Reece, the on-again-off-again girlfriend of Eriq La Salle‘s Dr. Peter Benton, in NBC’s ‘ER’ between 1996 and 2001.
Black News: Did Serena Really Threaten to Kill the Lines Judge?
Rain gave way to bedlam tonight at the U.S. Open.
Defending champion Serena Williams was charged with a point penalty on match point after yelling at a line judge for a calling a foot fault on her previous serve. The ruling gave Kim Clijsters a 6-4, 7-5 victory in their semifinal match, which had been delayed 32 hours because of rain.
After the line judge called the foot fault with Serena serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, the youngest Williams sister intimidatingly stared her down beforescreaming at the official with a jabbed finger. After a few seconds, Serena turned back around to serve, thought better of it and resumed the badgering. The chair umpire then called over the line judge to ask what Serena had said, rules officials were summoned, a brief summit occurred at the net and it was determined that Serena would be assessed a point penalty for a conduct violation. The point gave Clijsters the match.
The initial foot fault that began the fireworks was a terrible call. It was unconscionable. It cannot be made at the end of any match, let alone in the semifinals of the U.S. Open. This isn’t because a foot fault is a ridiculous call at that juncture (even though it is). It’s because it wasn’t a foot fault. The replays show that Serena’s foot was behind the line when she served. You could make the argument that it was close but not close enough to make the call.
“Hermaphrodite with no womb or ovaries”
The world of athletics is reeling today after a claim that South African champion runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite with no womb or ovaries.
A Sydney newspaper claims it has a world exclusive in revealing the very private information about the sex of the 18-year-old runner.
Quoting a source closely involved with the IAAF, the Sydney Daily Telegraph said Semenya had internal testes – male sexual organs which produce testosterone and which in turn produces muscle bulk, body hair and a deep voice.
Your Black Celebrity News: Judge Puts the HAMMER down on Chris Brown!
A judge on Tuesday sentenced Chris Brown to five years’ probation and six months’ community labor for the beating of Rihanna and ordered the R&B singer to stay away from his former girlfriend for the next five years.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg told Brown that he could be sent to state prison if he violated any terms of his sentence, including an order to stay 100 yards away from Rihanna unless they’re attending music industry events.
A probation report prepared for Tuesday’s sentencing describes two previous violent incidents. It said the first happened about three months before the February beating while the couple was traveling in Europe; Rihanna slapped Brown during an argument, and he shoved her into a wall. In the second instance, Brown allegedly broke the front and passenger side windows on a Range Rover they were driving while visiting Barbados, Rihanna’s home country. Neither attack was reported, the probation report states.
Your Black Celebrity News: Usher Is Officially a Free Man
Singer Usher Raymond is officially back to being a bachelor.
BV Buzz has learned exclusively that the 30-year-old singer’s divorce from his wife Tameka Foster has been finalized and an agreement was reached in pre-court settlement.
The camps aren’t talking now – likely preparing to give an exclusive to a media outlet like People magazine – but I hear an official announcement should drop soon.
A rep for the singer did not answer a detailed request for comment.
Foster’s publicist refuses to issue statements to BV Buzz anymore.
"In the future please don’t bother us again for direct quotes or responses from Tameka," a one-named flack named Melody e-mailed last week.
Usher is currently in Paris, France celebrating the end to the two-year marriage.
Your Black News: Michael’s Doctor Had Major Financial Problems
AP Photo/Houston Chronicle, Pool Photographer
Hmmm…maybe that’s why Dr. Conrad Murray is being so cooperative with the Los Angeles Police Department. And the Las Vegas Police Department. And the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. And the Drug Enforcement Administration.
It seems it’s not the good doctor’s first time at the rodeo.
A check of Michael Jackson‘s physician’s legal past has revealed everything from domestic violence charges (of which he was acquitted) to financial woes (which at one point included a bankruptcy filing) to his latest headache (you know, other than that whole target-of-a-manslaughter-investigation thing), the possibility that his Las Vegas home could soon be foreclosed upon.
Let’s hope the feds treaded lightly during yesterday’s search. Depreciation can be a real bitch.
Documents filed July 23 with the Clark County Recorder reveal that Murray could face foreclosure on his gated country club estate as soon as November. Though the timing on the filing may seem a bit like kicking Murray when he’s down, Jackson’s doctor reportedly fell more than $100,000 into debt on the home, with his last payment, of $15,000, being made in January of this year. (Which may be why Murray was so keen to stay in Jackson’s good graces and keep the $150,000-a-month salary that came with it.)
As for Murray’s less current troubles, here’s a rundown of his legal lowlights:
Kelis Says that 55k per month is not enough
just learned that R&B singer Kelis is claiming that she’s having a hard time making ends meet.
Remember how last month a judge ordered Nas to pay Kelis 55 thousand dollars a month in child and spousal support? Well apparently that’s not enough.
Because in a new court filing, We learned that Kelis is asking to have her support INCREASED … to 72,000 a month … plus another 18,000 a month in child support!!!
here’s the list of things that Kelis is asking for:
–child support totaling $17,225 a month
– spousal support totaling $72,728
– retroactive child support totaling $29,522
– retroactive spousal support totaling $281,571
Black News: Michael Vick’s Interesting Words
In his first interview since being released from federal prison and conditionally reinstated in the NFL, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick admitted he didn’t stand up to his peers, talked about disappointing team owner Arthur Blank, and said he’d earned his fall from grace.
“I deserved to lose the $130 million,” Vick told CBS commentator James Brown during the interview that aired on the Sunday night TV news journal 60 Minutes.
“Why would a guy who was making a $130 million … on the flip side … killing dogs … he don’t deserve it.”
Just two years ago, Vick was the highest paid player in pro football, with the $130 million deal from the Falcons and endorsement contracts with Nike and Atlanta-based AirTran Airways, among others.
But he lost it all when he admitted to bankrolling and participating in an interstate dog-fighting ring.
Instead, Vick faced a 23-month prison sentence — 18 months of it served in a federal penitentiary in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas — and millions of dollars in debt.
Bobby Brown Has a Warrant Issued for His Arrest
An arrest warrant has been issued for Bobby Brown after he failed to appear in a Massachusetts court on a contempt complaint.
Norfolk Judge Christina Harms ordered Brown arrested the next time the singer is in Massachusetts. He failed to appear at a June 29 hearing.
Register of Probate Patrick McDermott said Friday that by June, Brown had fallen $45,000 behind in child support payments for the two teenage children he had with former girlfriend Kim Ward.
Black News: Donte Stallworth Won’t be Playing This Year
Many have felt that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth may have got off easy after killing a pedestrian while driving drunk, but the NFL aren’t so lenient. While Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in prison and is on probation for awhile, the NFL suspended Stall worth for the entire upcoming season without pay.
"Your conduct endangered yourself and others, leading to the death of an innocent man," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to Stallworth released by the league according to NFL.com. "The NFL and NFL players must live with the stain that you have placed on their reputations. As you recognized both at and following the hearing, guilt or innocence as a matter of criminal law is not the same as a violation of NFL policies."
