Founder of Ebony Fashion Fair Dies at 93 Years Old

January 5, 2010 Leave a comment

Eunice W. Johnson gave Ebony magazine its name and for almost 50 years produced an influential traveling fashion show that brought haute couture to African-Americans while raising millions of dollars for charity.
The widow of Johnson Publishing Co. founder John H. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, 93, died of renal failure Sunday, Jan. 3, in her Chicago home, according to a company spokeswoman.
A close business partner of her husband’s since the beginning of Johnson Publishing in 1942, Mrs. Johnson remained the company’s secretary-treasurer at the time of her death and for years wrote a monthly fashion feature for Ebony magazine.
Johnson Publishing’s flagship, conceived as an African-American version of Life magazine and published since 1945, was named by Mrs. Johnson to reflect the mystique of fine black ebony wood, said Wendy Parks of Johnson Publishing.
But Mrs. Johnson’s greatest legacy may be her role as producer and director of the Ebony Fashion Fair, an influential event that for decades has been a showcase for the world’s top designers.

Hampton U Has a White Homecoming Queen

October 13, 2009 Leave a comment

Non-Black Homecoming QueenLast Friday, Nikole Churchill became Hampton University’s first non-black homecoming queen and the second non-black homecoming queen of any historically black college or university. Her crowning, by five judges, has caused controversy, as students and alumni debate whether Churchill deserves the distinction.

The 22-year-old Churchill is Hawaiian, with an Italian mother and a father from Guam. According to WTKR, she was chosen out of 10 applicants in the competition and reportedly built her win on the platform of mentoring girls ages 11–14 on topics including "self-esteem, body image, teenage pregnancies and nutrition."

Professor Pushes for a One Week Boycott of Haircare industry

October 6, 2009 Leave a comment

Atlanta, GA October 5, 2009 – Professor Devin Robinson, an economics professor at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA and best-selling author of Taking it Back: How to Become a Successful Black Beauty Supply Store Owner, will lead a one week long boycott against Non- Black Owned Beauty Supply stores.

Robinson stated, "Blacks make up 96% of the consumers of these stores, yet represent less than 5% of the retail ownership." As a previous owner of 3 locations, Robinson understands the industry inside out and offers comprehensive solutions for Blacks to recapture this industry. "The problem is with the distributors. Distributors are mainly Non-Blacks and they handpick who they will distribute products to. This oftentimes leaves aspiring black owners disenfranchised", said Robinson.

Black News: The 10 Biggest Black Women in Fashion

September 5, 2009 Leave a comment

“Project Runway” Season Five fan favorite Korto Momolu may not have won the big prize, but the designer definitely has a bright future in front of her. Her vibrant designs have already gotten her a wave of positive press and celebrity endorsements, and this weekend, she’s producing the fashion show at the "Tom Joyner Family Reunion" in Orlando, Florida.
But as a black designer, Momolu — like her Seasons One and Three counterparts, Kara Saun and Mychael Knight — is still a rarity in fashion. In fact, despite the exposure they’ve gained from “Project Runway,” blacks in fashion remain largely on the sidelines in an industry that is still segregated. But due to pioneering individuals who have managed to break through, openings have been created for Momolu, Saun, Knight and others who want to pursue their dreams in fashion.

How to Take Care of Your Child’s Hair

August 3, 2009 Leave a comment

little girl hair

Your little girl is an angel most of the time… until you sit her down between your knees to comb her hair. Then it’s tears and squeals and tantrum time.

I don’t have kids myself, but trust me, I know. I was once that little girl. And I can tell you from experience, there’s a right way and a wrong way to care for your child’s hair.

I first learned about this story via The Root, in Teresa Wiltz’s essay Beauty, the Brush, and Black Girl Pain. I can barely stand to watch this now-infamous YouTube video (click the picture of the little girl to watch), which raises more questions than it answers.

For example, does this mother think she’s actually making an efficient and effective attempt at combing her little girl’s hair? Because she isn’t. In fact, she’s doing just the opposite.
