The summer is a time for warm weather, vacation, family reunions and weddings. Many couples plan their wedding during the summer and fall months. Planning a wedding can bring a lot of stress and drama to the couple. From deciding when and where to get married, to working on the guest list and to figuring out how you will pay for the wedding. Stress and drama can also come from what other people want for your wedding and from handling major conflicts such as faith, money or where to live after the wedding. It is possible to get the wedding you want and not have any drama, even with all the possibilities leading up to the wedding.

Dr. Wilmer Leon: Debt Compromise on the Backs of African Americans is Really an Historical Trend
By
Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III
During this debt and deficit debate President Obama has been very clear in stating, “Not only is it not fair if all this is done on the backs of middle-class families,” Obama said, “it doesn’t make sense. … That’s why people from both parties have said the best way to take on our deficit is with a balanced approach … one where wealthy Americans and corporations pay their share, too.” It appeared as though closing tax loopholes and increased revenues coming from the “…oil company or a corporate jet owner that’s doing so well …” was not a point of compromise.

Bush agreed to a two-year contract for nearly $10 million with the Dolphins, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter Thursday.” According to reports, Bush was supposed to make approximately $11.8 million dollars this season in the final year of his contract. Men May Soon Be Taking Birth Control Pills Too

By JasmineHughes
To date, “the pill” has represented a sort of victory for women’s rights, but the realities of taking a daily medication that is sometimes accompanied by an expense and unpleasant side effects may make it more of a burden for women than a reproductive equalizer. And so comes male birth control, which, researchers say, might finally help men and women to take on life’s responsibilities together in about 10 years.

Abortion–A Quick Fix? Listen to This Story….

From Mochamusings.com
Let me tell you my story. At 15 I got pregnant. I was happy and terrified at the same time. I couldn’t believe I had a baby growing inside me, but I knew I was way too young. Abortion seemed like my only option. I couldn’t imagine going through with the pregnancy and giving my baby away. And my worse fear… my family finding out! What would they think of me? I’m a good girl. I go to school. I got a job. And, I cause very little trouble. I tried to tell my mom and even a few older cousins. But, I would shake profusely every time. I never got the courage. So, at 15, my boyfriend and I had a friend take us to the clinic. What a memory…
The place is packed with young girls and very few, if any, parents. It was like an assembly line. First up: a clipboard full of paperwork. I had no idea what to put because I knew very little. Next up: payment window. Never once did anyone review the paper work that I faked my way through or even attempt to ask for ID. Really! Now it’s my turn to go back.

When a White Rapper Uses the N-Word, are We to Blame?

By JasmineHughes
With criticism growing by the day of a white female rapper’s use of the N-word (V-Nasty), people are beginning to speak out. Andy Milonakis,a white actor, who often imitates hip-hop culture, has decided to defend V-nasty’s use of the N-word.
On a clip posted on YouTube by the actor himself, Milonakis said, “My problem is people spinning their own f—–g idea of another human being that they don’t f—–g know. That to me is ignorant. Have you ever been to a ‘hood? Have you ever been to Atlanta, or East Oakland? Every race drops the N-bomb. You’re dissing someone who is on your team.”

Prisons: America’s New System of Slavery
by Rania Khalek
There is one group of American workers so disenfranchised that corporations are able to get away with paying them wages that rival those of third-world sweatshops. These laborers have been legally stripped of their political, economic and social rights and ultimately relegated to second-class citizens. They are banned from unionizing, violently silenced from speaking out and forced to work for little to no wages. This marginalization renders them practically invisible, as they are kept hidden from society with no available recourse to improve their circumstances or change their plight.

By JasmineHughes
Even with a growing number of Black women embracing their natural hair, there remains an immense fascination with it, this includes both other races and also some unfamiliar Blacks. It seems the ‘Puffy Hair Movement’ will take some getting used to.
For many who don’t know, the term “natural hair” for black women is defined as hair that is not processed and not chemically altered. Straightened hair is often viewed as easier to care for and more attractive, but for some, the dangers of a chemical straightener, like a relaxer, are too much. So, instead, they opt to wear their hair in its natural state. Natural hair can be described as curly, kinky, wavy etc. the list goes on.

Duchess Harris: The Alienation of Black Women from Feminist Movements

For 20 years I have read how Black women felt alienated by the second wave of feminism, but because I was born during this time period, I never "felt" it until the 2008 Presidential election.
It started with the extremely unpleasant showdown between Gloria Steinem and Melissa Harris Lacewell, (now Perry) surrounding Steinem’s NY Times Op Ed about then-Senator Barack Obama.
This was followed by the late Geraldine Ferraro’s dismissive comments that Senator Obama was winning the race because he was not White.
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. …He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

![]()
by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action
A new study presented some disturbing, yet expected news about the sad state of economic affairs within the African American community. According to the study, the wealth gap between white and black Americans has become the widest that it’s been in the last 25 years. As it stands, whites have a wealth level that is 20 times greater than blacks, and 18 times greater than Hispanics.
Much of the drop in black family wealth is due primarily to the decline in home values and heightened unemployment during the great recession of the last three years. African Americans currently have the highest unemployment rates in America, with the most recent data listing the rate at 16.2 percent.

I think there was another charge that slips my mind at the moment.” To these statements, Martin understandably asked, “Isn’t failing to file and not paying the same thing?” Snipes responded saying that the two are wholly different, because failing to file is a misdemeanor, and tax evasion is a federal offense.

Julius Kane: Why Good Times is Far More Relevant than the Cosby Show Will Ever Be
By Julius Kane
Stop playin’ ‘Good Times’ was better than ‘The Cosby show’ for real; the first three seasons before the father’s character was killed off, anyway. You can run around town and act like you’re embarrassed of ‘Good Times’ but I sure as hell ain’t. A couple of so called critics even said ‘The Cosby Show’ was a "real depiction of a Black family." Again, stop playin’. How realistic is it even in WHITE AMERICA for a doctor to be married to a lawyer, have half a dozen kids and they all go to college? What did ‘The Cosby Show’ teach you? Sure, it made you wish for a better life and smashed a lot cultural stereotypes. But ‘The Cosby Show’wasn’t the best Black television show of all time; not by a long shot. In actuality‘The Cosby Show’ was the best Black television show for White folks to watch. It allowed White folks to see a different side of the Black experience and gave Black folks faces, places and images they could finally be proud of.
