At least 89 people were killed yesterday in Joplin, Missouri when a massive tornado cut a path nearly 6 miles long and more than a half-mile wide through the center of town.
Authorities expect the death toll to rise as search and rescue continues, and as of now the number of injuries from the storm is unknown. The towns fire chief Mitch Randles estimated 25 to 30 percent of the town was damaged. Randles stated, “It cut the city in half.”
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the Joplin tornado was one of 68 tornadoes that were reported this past weekend in seven Midwest states. Out of all seven states Missouri suffered the most damage from the storms.
