BOSTON — The Harvard University Police Department passed over a black officer for a number of promotions and superiors routinely made racist remarks about blacks and Latinos, according to a federal lawsuit.
The complaint by Officer George Pierce, a veteran patrolman who is black, said he applied for open sergeant positions a number of times only to be passed over for less-qualified, non-black employees. The reason Pierce didn’t get promoted was his race, the lawsuit alleged, citing various instances when Pierce sought a sergeant spot but was turned down.
“Throughout Pierce’s employment at Harvard, Harvard and the department have created and maintained a pervasive racially-biased environment within the department,” the lawsuit said.

With gas prices rising nationwide, the Obama administration said it will investigate the energy markets for any evidence of manipulation of oil and gas prices.
With the average price of a gallon of gas at about $3.84 nationally this week, almost a dollar higher than a year ago, the U.S. Attorney General’s office formed the Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group to root out cases of fraud and collusion, as well as price manipulation.
"We are going to make sure that no one is taking advantage of the American people for their own short-term gain," President Obama said Thursday at a town hall meeting in Nevada.
The group will consist of representatives from nine federal organizations including the Justice, Treasury, Agriculture and Energy departments, the Federal Trade Commission, theFederal Reserve Board and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Given the importance of the critical theme of black relationships (which we’re hitting from various angles this week on YBW), I had to get another perspective on some of the things that folks are quoting from the bible as it pertains to how black relationships need to be structured. What does it mean for a black man to “lead” in his relationship? What does it mean for a woman to “submit?” One thing that many of us can agree on is the fact that black relationships have been falling apart for a very long time. The majority of our homes are being run by a single parent, and far too many children are growing up without their fathers in shouting distance. What some don’t acknowledge is that there is a direct correlation between the break down of the black family and the growth of the prison industrial complex. Locking up men for decades for the sale of drugs that were brought into our communities has devastated many of us, and urban decay in the 1980s led to job losses with few viable alternatives to illegal activity. A recent study in The Economist showed that a one percentage point increase in the incarceration rate leads to a 2.4 percent decline in the percentage of black women who eventually get married.

The Michigan State Police are planning to use a gadget that works with a “Universal Forensic Extraction Device,” that can copy all of the contents off someone’s cell phone. This includes all texts, emails, phone calls, pictures and videos. The device works on 3,000 cell phone models. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is asking a lot of questions about the device. They speculate that it can be abused to violate the civil rights of countless American citizens.
Police are arguing that the device can be used to keep important evidence before trial, but the ACLU wonders if the devices are being used to get private information from citizens who are not under suspicion. They also wonder if the information is being gathered without the consent of the motorist or a search warrant. Civil Rights advocates argue that the device violates the Fourth Amendment, which forbids illegal search and seizure. When the ACLU wrote a letter to the police department, the department asked for over $500,000 for the release of the information.

Hoping to rekindle excitement among younger voters, President Obama spoke at a town-hall meeting hosted by Facebook on Wednesday and asked for help in beating back "radical" Republican budget proposals.
He sat on a stage next to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who served as moderator and funneled largely friendly questions to a president who makes extensive use of social media in reaching out to voters.
Zuckerberg confessed to being nervous, but the two bantered easily. Obama made a light reference to the 26-year-old’s billionaire status. In describing his tax plan, Obama said that he and "frankly, you, Mark," can afford to pay "a little more in taxes."
Taking questions submitted through Facebook and from an audience of company employees, Obama advised listeners not to get frustrated by protracted debates in Washington. He conceded that some of his 2008 voters might be asking why progress on many issues hasn’t come sooner. But he urged them not to give up on his agenda.

The report from the West Bloomfield Township police, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information request, also said Rose registered a 0.088 blood-alcohol level two hours after the March 11 crash. Michigan’s legal limit is 0.08.

He was driving the 2004 SUV along Walnut Lake Road when it veered off the roadway about 2:10 a.m. and rolled over just east of Middlebelt, about 20 miles northwest of Detroit. Neither Rose nor his female passenger was hurt in the crash.

Donald Trump has risen to the top of the Republican presidential candidate ratings while campaigning on the nutty charge that President Obama isn’t American, that he is not legally qualified to be president.
The Trump effect has led others, like Sarah Palin, to start hedging their dismissal of these absurdities. If this continues, the Republican race could turn into a race for the muck.
America deserves better. Jobs are short; wages aren’t keeping up; home values keep falling. The banks are doing fine, but people are still losing their homes. The rich are paying fewer taxes while the poor pay more fees. The middle class is getting crushed. Good jobs are still shipped abroad, replaced, if at all, by lower-wage work. There is now more student loan debt owed in America than credit card debt.
We need a serious debate about what we do to get out of this hole.

I just spoke yesterday with Gwen Samuel from the Connecticut Parents’ Union. She has informed me of the situation on the ground in Connecticut with regard to educational inequality. As in many other cities across the nation, the schools in Norwalk, CT (where Ms. McDowell sent her child) are far superior to the schools in Bridgeport, CT (where she was legally expected to send her little boy). Therefore, while we can’t say for sure exactly why Ms. McDowell broke the law to send her child to the Norwalk school system, it is clear that there is a strong incentive to break the law to get access to a quality education.

Armstrong and three of her children drown, with the fourth child swimming to shore.
Right before killing her family, Armstrong wrote a Facebook message stating: “I’m sorry everyone forgive me please for what I’m gonna do… This is it!!!”
The river was just seven blocks from Armstrong’s home in Newburgh, New York. Leshaun, the 10-year old boy who escaped from the van, got out of the car by climbing over his mother’s leg. She grabbed at his leg as he was climbing out, and eventually let go. The boy told the woman who found him that his mother realized shortly after driving into the river that she’d made a mistake and tried to back out.

Dear Fellow Democrat,
On Friday, John Boehner’s House Republicans plan to ram through their rightwing TeaParty budget for 2012, which would destroy Medicare to pay for bigger tax breaks for billionaires.
But the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) fought for – and won – a separate vote on the "People’s Budget," which fights for the priorities we and most Americans support.
Tell your Representatives to vote for the CPC People’s Budget.
In a nutshell, the CPC People’s Budget:
1. Eliminates the Deficit by 2021 without devastating Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
The CPC budget targets the true drivers of deficits: the Bush Tax Cuts, the wars overseas, and the causes and effects of the recent recession. By implementing a fair tax code, by building a resilient American economy, and by bringing our troops home, it achieves a budget surplus of over $30 billion by 2021.

The United States House of Representatives passed a budget deal that was reached between Democrats and Republicans. The deal helped legislators to avert a pending government shutdown that was bound to occur if an agreement had not been reached. House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid worked with President Obama to slice $38 Billion from the federal budget over the next six months.
The final vote on the deal was 260 – 167. Republicans were most favorable toward the deal, providing 179 votes. Only 81 Democrats supported the measure. Now, the bill is set to head to the Senate, where it is predicted that it will pass and then be sent to the White House for President Obama’s signature.
