Group of African American Scholars Go Hard Against Henry Louis Gates

May 31, 2010 1 comment

Statement by the Committee to Advance the Movement for Reparations

We, the undersigned, take strong exception to the Op-Ed, “Ending the Slavery Blame-Game,” published in the New York Times, April 23, 2010 by Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. There are gross errors, inaccuracies and misrepresentations in Gates’ presentation of the transatlantic European enslavement system. Moreover, we are duly concerned about his political motivations and find offensive his use of the term “blame game.” It trivializes one of the most heinous crimes against humanity—the European enslavement of African people. Gates contradicts his stated purpose of “ending” what he refers to as a “blame-game,” by erroneously making African rulers and elites equally responsible with European and American enslavers. He shifts the “blame” in a clear attempt to undermine the demand for reparations.

The African Holocaust or Maafa, as it is referred to by many, is a crime against humanity and is recognized as such by the United Nations, scholars, and historians who have documented the primary and overwhelming culpability of European nations for enslavement in Europe, in the Americas and elsewhere. In spite of this overwhelming documentation, Gates inexplicably shifts the burden of culpability to Africans who were and are its victims. The abundance of scholarly work also affirms that Europeans initiated the process, established the global infrastructure for enslavement, and imposed, financed and defended it, and were the primary beneficiaries of it in various ways through human trafficking itself, banking, insurance, manufacturing, farming, shipping and allied enterprises.

Killer of Three Black College Students Convicted

May 25, 2010 Leave a comment

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, The Institute for Black Public Policy

Nearly three years ago, two black college students and a friend were murdered in a schoolyard in Newark, NJ. Monday, a jury returned guilty verdicts for three of the murders and one attempted murder after deliberating for less than a day.
Rodolfo Godinez, a 26-year old gang member and native of Nicaragua, was convicted of all charges against him, including multiple counts of robbery, weapons possession and conspiracy. He can get up to 30 years to life for each murder count, and the sentences can be given out consecutively.
"This man will never see the light of day," said Robert D. Laurino, the acting Essex County prosecutor.
Sentencing for Godinez is set for July 8. His lawyer, Roy Greenman, said,"Obviously, there will be an appeal on a number of grounds," but he declined to state the grounds on which he’d be filing.
The prosecution did not assert that Godinez was the one who hacked at the victims with a machete or shot each of them execution-style, in the back of the head. He was argued, however, to be the one who summoned the other gang members to the schoolyard on the night when the murders took place. The murders were particularly chilling because all four of the victims were "good kids" with no criminal history and educational plans for the future.

Jamaica News: Kingston Under Siege, Extradition Warrant Signed for Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke

Free Speaks on the Jamaican Drug Lord and Riots in Kingston

christopher coke Jamaica, Mr. Coke, And The United States

Posted by Free from Freesworld.com

Prime Minister for West Kingston Jamaica Bruce Golden urged residents to be calm in a press release issued yesterday in regards to the extradition process of Christopher Coke from Jamaica to the US. He is trying to assure them that what happened in 2001 (read here) won’t happen again. The U.S has been ready to prosecute Mr. Dudus on drugs and arms trafficking charges. But trying to extradite him from his native country of Jamaica was no easy task. So the U.S started pulling strings to get Jamaica’s government to turn him over. How? I’m sure there are ways we don’t know about but one thing the U.S. did was cancel all access to America for Jamaican artists like Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, and Adonia.

The Jamaican government has finally agreed to extradition, but Mr. Coke (this is really his last name) who lives in, no runs Tivoli Gardens, one of the roughest parts of Kingston, Jamaica, doesn’t seem to want to go peacefully. Last week criminals from Denham Town and Tivoli Gardens put up blockades surrounding all entries to the community to protect him.

Julianne Malveaux Breaks Down Obama’s Financial Reform

Financial Reform-The Devil’s In The Details

By Julianne Malveaux

Late last week, the United States Senate passed a financial reform bill by a vote of 59-39. Two Democrats crossed party lines, as did four Republicans to come up with the result. Now, the House, which has already passed financial reform legislation, and the Senate, will have to reconcile their versions of the bill. Now is the time for consumer advocates and others to counter the aggressive lobbying that will be done by banks and the auto industry to minimize the effects of legislation. This may also be an opportunity for the Congressional Black Caucus to raise its voice on the side of the many consumers who have been damaged by this financial crisis. While legislation is not meant to look backwards, but instead forward to prevent future crises, the CBC are among those who advocate for the least and the left out. Their perspective on financial regulation is badly needed.

The House would create a consumer protection agency that is freestanding; the Senate would house the agency inside the Federal Reserve Bank. In some ways having the Fed run consumer protection is like having the fox patrol the chicken coop. Isn’t this the same Fed that was part and parcel of the 2008 financial meltdown, the same Fed (then led by Alan Greenspan) that turned a blind eye to predatory and sub-prime lending and the market distortions that emerged from the packaging of substandard loan paper? The Federal Reserve theoretically already deals with regulation around credit cards and mortgages and to date they’ve not done a good job. What will change when they now have a consumer protection agency? Hearings, anyone?

    Image: Christopher "Dudus" Coke

    By DAVID McFADDEN

updated 2 hours, 57 minutes ago

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Masked men torched a police station and traded gunfire with security forces in a patchwork of barricaded slums in Jamaica’s capital Sunday, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.

Sporadic gunshots rang out in gritty West Kingston where defiant supporters of Christopher "Dudus" Coke, a Jamaican "don" sought by the U.S. on drug and arms trafficking charges, turned his Tivoli Gardens neighborhood and other areas into a virtual fortress with trashed cars and barbed wire.

In barricaded Hannah Town, close to Tivoli Gardens, black smoke spiraled into the sky from a police station set aflame by molotov cocktails.

If you’re like me, you use an ATM at least once a month, maybe more. But how many of you have ever given a moment’s thought to how automatic teller machines came into being or who created them? I’ll admit, I never thought about it either — at least not until I read this brief AP article about the death of its inventor.
The man who dreamed up the cash machine was a Scotsman named John Shepherd-Barron. He passed away earlier this week after a short illness at a hospital in north Scotland. Back in 2007, Shepherd-Barron gave an interview to the BBC in which he described what inspired his invention. It was basic enough: He first got the notion to develop the ATM after being locked out of his bank.
Later, the first ATM was installed in London on June 27, 1967, at a Barclays PlC branch. Today, there are more than 1.7 million automatic teller machines worldwide, according to the ATM Industry Association.

5 Easy Steps to Figuring Out Your Debt-to-Income Ratio

Are you interested in knowing your debt-to-income ratio to determine how much house you can afford? You don’t need to go to a bank to do this. You can do it on your own by following five easy steps. But first you need to know a bit of mortgage lingo to understand how lenders look at your debts when they evaluate your qualifications for a mortgage.
    Front-End and Back-End Ratios Explained
Let’s say your car payment is $285 a month, your credit card bills are $220 a month, and you pay $95 a month on your student loans. Therefore, your total monthly debts are $600. If your total income is $3,200 monthly, then your debt-to-income ratio is 18.75 percent ($600 divided by $3,200). This obviously excludes your housing costs. When you find a home you want to purchase, a lender will look closely at two things:
    • Your housing debt compared to your income
Your housing expense is known as your "front-end" ratio.
    • Your overall debt compared to your income
Your total debt, housing plus other bills, is known as your "back-end" ratio.

by Dr. Boyce Watkins – The Institute for Black Public Policy

When I first heard about the recent rape allegation against former New York Giant Lawrence Taylor, I wasn’t sure what to think. I can say that I was highly skeptical of his wife’s claims that her husband was set up. But there was something inside that led me to wonder how in the world someone could argue that they accidentally ended up in a room with an underage girl or didn’t know they were having sex with one. In New York state, even if you don’t know you’re with an underage woman, you are still held responsible in the end. So, without regard to the situation of Lawrence Taylor, I was simply curious about how all this works.
That led me to do some investigating to find out more about the dark world of teen prostitution, and the experiences of young women who enter into this seedy profession at such an early age.

“They have a list of men they plan to sleep with before they’re 21 years old…athletes and celebrities are on it.”

Young girls- ages 15 and 16 pretending to be 18 and older. A woman named Regina has seen these girls even as naive as thirteen posing as older women, sporting fake identities ordered from online vendors.

Absent-minded children, with bodies giving off no indication of prepubescent age; the perfect vulnerability required to carryout their plans. She explained how the group leaders recruit these young girls equally thirsty for money, coerce them into believing they will be successful, and show them how to “work” the areas, the leagues or the cities.

“They think…why make $100, when you can make $1,000?” she added.

Obama Assassination Used as Example in Class

    May 18, 2010 3 comments

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University

A teacher in Alabama apparently takes his geometry lessons a little too seriously. A high school math teacher was teaching his students about angles and used the assassination of President Barack Obama as his teaching example.
The Secret Service was alerted and the teacher was questioned by federal agents. He was not taken in to custody or charged with a crime.
"We did not find a credible threat," said Roy Sex ton, special agent in charge of Birmingham’s Secret Service office. As far as the Secret Service is concerned, we looked in to it, we talked to the gentleman and we have closed our investigation."
The teacher was explaining the use of angles by describing where you would stand if you wanted to aim and shoot Obama.

What? Did Matt Lauer Have an Affair with Whitney Houston’s Sister?

    May 16, 2010 2 comments

Matt Lauer cheats on wife with whiney houston's half-sister alexis

Popular ‘Today’ show host Matt Lauer and his wife of 12 years, Annette, have split. Word on the street is that when Lauer was in Vancouver covering the Winter Olympics, he allegedly "bumped Uggs" with Whitney Houston’s half-sister, Alexis Houston.

Houston, who also dabbles in music as a singer/songwriter/producer, met Lauer on the set of his show back in 2007. She accompanied Dionne Warwick, who had sung one of her hits for a segment on marriage. Reportedly, Warwick and the show’s producers had some friction before the segment aired, and Houston squashed it. Lauer was apparently impressed with how Houston handled her cousin, sources toldHollyscoop.

Dr. Boyce: Elena Kagan’s Nomination Overlooks Black Women

    May 15, 2010 1 comment

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University

To the disappointment of the Black Women’s Roundtable, Elena Kagan was the latest white American to leapfrog in front of black women for a chance to serve on the Supreme Court. The second-class citizenship of African American women has been consistently enforced by our nation, going back 221 years to the date that the Supreme Court was founded. This nomination was especially disheartening for those who felt that the year of Dorothy Height’s death would be the perfect time for the nation’s first black President to do what should have been done long ago and nominate a black woman for the highest court in the land.

"Needless to say, we are disconcerted by the perceived lack of real consideration of any of the extremely qualified African American women as potential nominees," reads the statement released by the Black Women’s Roundtable.
After this is over, President Barack Obama will have serious trouble re-inspiring the millions of African American women who left the Hillary Clinton camp to back his "Hope and change" campaign. There was no logical reason for him to pass over a black woman for consideration for this post, only political reasons. Kagan was the nominee that could shore up the white female vote for mid-term elections and help the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party stop the bleeding set to occur in November. Roland Martin does a wonderful job of breaking down the losses within the black female demographic that are set to occur as a result of the Kagan snub on the Supreme Court.

Dr. Malveaux’s Message to Our Graduates

    May 15, 2010 Leave a comment

If you ever attended a National Council of Negro Women event, you ended up singing "This Little Light of Mine" at the end of the event. It was Dr. Dorothy Irene Height’s favorite song, "This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine". The civil rights pioneer, Fannie Lou Hamer, also loved to sing "This Little Light of Mine", and it is easy to see why. The song encompasses humility and empowerment, the recognition that each light is little, but that in choosing to allow it to shine, to amplify, it can be great. Dr. Maya Angelou wrote, "Fannie Lou Hamer knew that she was one woman and only one woman. However, she knew she was an American and as an American she had a light to shine on the darkness of racism. It was a little light, but she aimed it directly at the gloom of ignorance."

Dr. Dorothy Height and Fannie Lou Hamer embraced their light and shone it at our nation’s deficiencies. On Saturday, I asked the 80 women who graduated from Bennett College how they might allow their light to shine. In so many ways, this is the issue that confronts young people, and indeed the issue that confronts us all. What is our passion? How will we transmit it? How will we let our light shine?

In the weeks since Dr. Dorothy Height’s death I have been thinking of the many ways she let her light shine. She shone light on issues of equal pay, workplace inequities, global issues of gender inequity, health disparities, and other issues. And by her very presence she tackled racism, sexism, classism, and ageism, refusing to be marginalized because she was nearly one hundred years old. She didn’t elbow her way to the table, but in her dignity she insisted on space. By just coming to work every day, well after the retirement age of 65, she shone her light on the capabilities of older Americans. She didn’t just shine her light, she was incandescent.

    Why LeBron will Leave Cleveland

    May 15, 2010 Leave a comment

    by Dr. Boyce Watkins

I love the city of Cleveland. I also feel bad for the city, since there isn’t much to cheer for in this economically-depressed town. The one thing they have is LeBron James, and now even that’s in jeopardy. Ending with an embarrassing loss to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs, the Cavs are finding themselves shuffling to keep "the chosen one" in the place he started his career.

LeBron has had a good run with the Cavs, and he’s proven himself beyond any reasonable doubt. But the truth is that all good things must come to an end, and it’s time for LeBron to have a different experience.

I believe that LeBron wants to be in the thick of it all. He wants to be in New York or New Jersey, where the lights are brighter, the media hype is hyper, and the action never stops. He wants to be in the mecca of entertainment, media and sports, where he can build a legacy that will be remembered for the next 100 years. He wants to play for a team with a bottomless pit of money that comes from a market where the fans will pay any amount to see a champion at his best. That place would be either LA or New York, and he’s not going to play next to Kobe.

Elena Kagan Appointment Leads to Black Female Uproar

    May 15, 2010 Leave a comment

E KaganFrom Politic 365: The announcement of Elena Kagan could not really be called a surprise, since the White House went out of its way to all but announce her as their pick over the last week. The Obama Administration dropped hints by the dozens to their favored reporters, who dutifully shared their information with the rest of us. I had come to accept it as a done deal, even though I had been a little perturbed at the way the D.C. pundits only mentioned three or four names from the president’s short list, as if the rest of the names on it, like Georgia’s ownLeah Ward Sears, were invisible.

It wasn’t until I called a friend of mine, an African American lawyer here in Atlanta who had been a diehard Hillary supporter and then a reluctant Barack Obama supporter after he became the Democratic nominee, that I realized that others felt the same way. "First he puts a Hispanic woman on the court. Fine. He’s paying back the Hispanics for their support," she said. "Then he puts a white woman on the court. Okay – he’s paying them back for coming over to his side after Hillary lost. I see that.

But why do I have to be last? Why do black women always have to be last? I don’t think he cares."

It’s Time to Put a Black Woman on the Supreme Court

    May 15, 2010 2 comments

A statement from the Your Black World Coalition:

Dr. Watkins was on MSNBC again this morning debating Harvard Law Professor Ronald Sullivan.  Dr. Watkins, along with Roland Martin (CNN), Marc Lamont Hill (Columbia University), Guy Charles (Duke University) and other black scholars/public figures opposes the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, partly due to the fact that she has a very poor hiring record when it comes to under-represented minorities.  Under her watch, 28 of the 29 tenured and tenure track hires at The Harvard Law School were white, with no Black, Latino or Native American people selected.  We cannot tolerate these Jim Crow ideals in academia in the 21st century.  As Solicitor General, her hiring record was almost identical to the one she had at Harvard, so the idea that she didn’t have the power as dean to diversify the faculty is quite faulty in our assessment.  Given that Kagan was unwilling to stand up against injustice as dean and Solicitor General, we do not expect her to have the courage or desire to do so as a Supreme Court justice.

Dr. Watkins believes that it’s time that our nation have a black woman on the Supreme Court.  The year of Dorothy Height’s death would have been a perfect time to do what we should have done 221 years ago when the Supreme Court was founded.  Therefore, we are, like the Black Women’s Roundtable, incredibly disappointed that Kagan was selected over more qualified African American women.  This situation is a microcosm of what’s happening nation-wide, where black unemployment lies at 16.5% because qualified minorities are being passed over for opportunities by institutions that remain addicted to systematic racism.  Our institutions are sick with racially-disparate outcomes and they are refusing to admit it.

Finally, there is a dangerous element of elitism present in the Kagan nomination.  If she is confirmed, Harvard and Yale will have 100% control over the Supreme Court, making all other law schools across the nation null and void in the highest levels of the political process.  Only allowing an elite and select few Americans to control our most powerful courts undermines the ideals on which our nation was founded.  America should not be an aristocracy.

Dr. Boyce speaks with Jeff Johnson at BET

    May 13, 2010 Leave a comment

    Jeff Johnson

I’ve always had a sincere amount of respect for BET’s Jeff Johnson. Jeff is usually on the speaking circuit one step ahead of me, and he has a profound message that the country seems to appreciate. I first met Jeff when we were on CNN together. We were debating whether college athletes should be paid. The NCAA exploits the heck out of black America by stripping the labor rights from college athleteswhile signing multibillion dollar deals. The NCAA earns more money duringMarch Madness than the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball earn during their post-season play, mostly on the backs of African American labor. In fact, the NCAA takes hundreds of millions per year out of the black community by not compensating athletes, and many of the athletes are not being properly educated.
I spent time with Jeff’s daughter backstage at the CNN show. She is an intelligent young woman who loves to take pictures. We became best friends for our 30 minutes of hanging out, and, as expected, Jeff has raised her to be an outstanding human being. The next time I hung out with Jeff personally was at the "Measuring the Movement" forum, hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton in New York City. Jeff and I were backstage with the other panelists, including NAACP President Ben Jealous, Urban League President Marc Morial, Democratic Whip James Clyburn, Michael Eric Dyson, Charles Ogletree, Roland Martin, Tom Joyner, Judge Greg Mathis and many others. It was a fun ride, and I respect everyone who came out. Jeff’s contributions to the panel were outstanding.

Dr. Boyce: Elena Kagan’s Poor Record with Minorities

    May 12, 2010 2 comments

by Dr. Boyce Watkins – The Institute for Black Public Policy

I want to cheer for President Barack Obama. I want to believe that his decisions are sound, intelligent and good for our nation. But that trust is undermined at times, and to the ire of some of my friends, I can’t help but share what’s truly on my mind. My discomfort with Obama’s decision-making ability comes to the forefront of my conscience when I evaluate Elena Kagan, Obama’s most recent nominee to the Supreme Court.
On the surface, Kagan seems O.K. She presents herself as the standard liberal that we would expect Obama to nominate, someone who might be a small step toward filling the incredibly large shoes of retired Justice John Paul Stevens. As they say in the military, "check." Kagan has also shown the ambition and focus necessary to make herself into a star in the legal profession, opening doors for women everywhere she went. Double-Check. Finally, her experience as Solicitor General means that she has worked closely with the Supreme Court in the past, and that she would also be good at building a consensus among other members of the court. Check, check check.

But there is something disturbing about the resume of Elena Kagan. Something that is almost irritatingly redundant about her path to the top of American politics. The "Obamaesque" nature of her resume, honestly wreaks of the elitist cronyism that most of us have come to expect from President Obama’s less than stellar appointments during his presidency. Let’s start from the top, shall we?

Eric Holder Speaks Out Against Racial Profiling Law

    May 10, 2010 1 comment

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University

United States Attorney General Eric Holder stated on Sunday that he doesn’t think that the Arizona law which cracks down on illegal immigration is racially-motivated. But he says that he is concerned that the law might promote racial-profiling. He also acknowledged that the US has a national immigration problem and that the problem can’t be cured with a "state-by-state" solution.
Holder appeared on ABC’s "This Week" and stated that he understands the frustration that led to the law being passed, but "we could potentially get on a slippery slope where people will be picked on because of how they look as opposed to what they have done."
The law allows police to question anyone they believe to possibly be an illegal immigrant, which opens the door to harassment of the state’s Hispanic population. According to the last count, Arizona is 30% Latino. Holder says that the Justice Department is "considering all options," including a lawsuit claiming that the Arizona law pre-empts federal powers or is a violation of federal civil rights statutes.

April Unemployment Remains High for Blacks

    May 9, 2010 Leave a comment

by Dr. Boyce Watkins – The Institute for Black Public Policy

Persistently high black unemployment remains a problem here in the United States, as the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that African Americans have an unemployment rate of 16.5 percent, compared to 9 percent for white Americans. This rate remains the same as last month, even though the economy created 290,000 jobs during the month of April.
White unemployment rose slightly from last month’s rate of 8.8 percent, but black unemployment is still over 80 percent higher than that of White Americans.
Black women saw their unemployment number rise to 13.7 percent from 12.4 percent last month. This number is 85 percent higher than the unemployment rate for white women, which is at 7.4 percent. Black males are at the bottom of the barrel, with an unemployment rate of 18 percent, which is 95 percent higher than that for white men.
Black teen unemployment also continues to be a problem. African American teenagers saw their unemployment rate drop from 41.1 percent to 37.3 percent. But this number is 58 percent higher than a white teen unemployment rate of 23.5 percent.
Some argue that President Obama and Congress must do something to help with the black unemployment situation. The Congressional Black Caucus is urging the passage of a $1.5 billion dollar jobs bill to reduce black teen unemployment in order to curb youth violence. Violence among teens tends to increase during the summer months, when kids are out of school.
