It is irresponsible, bordering on insanity, to imply, infer, or promote the nonsense, that H1N1 can be “cured” by any other method, other than the body’s immune system. H1N1 is a virus. It can only infect and cause symptoms by person-to-person contact with someone who knowingly or unknowingly has come in contact with the virus. Only people with compromised immune systems are subject to succumbing to the virus. Regular seasonal flu has traditionally seen high mortality rates among the elderly, or among those populations with compromised immune systems. H1N1 is different, in that young people under 18, and people with no other complicating conditions (otherwise healthy) have been particularly vulnerable.
There is no “cure” for the H1N1 virus, and short of being totally isolated from other people, there is no practical way to avoid coming in contact with it. There is no magic pill, diet, or magic charm that can protect you from it. Poor people are especially vulnerable to H1N1, and should not hesitate to get the innoculation when it is available. While getting the shot is no guarantee that you won’t get the flu, if you wait too late to allow the vaccine to help your immune system build up antibodies, it will be too late, and can’t help you. Just because you feel fine now, does not mean the virus is not attacking your body right now.
Bottom line. Get the vaccine. If you don’t like shots, “man up” and get over it. Tell your friends to get the shot. Tell them not to listen to people who have no real knowledge about basic science. Don’t listen to shamans, psychics, voodoo priests, or ranting talking heads on the cable channels. Get the vaccine, and tell everyone you know, to do the same.
Thank you for your comment. The title has been corrected, the word ‘cure’ was inadvertantly used. In fact, the Medicine On Call episode with Dr Clairborne was a discussion about natural ways to prevent and lessen the effects of infection with the flu virus.
I agree with you that there is no magic bullet. However, I think it is important that people be given as much information as possible in order to make an informed choice.
The facts are that the H1N1 virus is proving to be no more deadly than the seasonal flu virus. It is not the H1N1 virus that is causing deaths in adults and children, but it is the secondary bacterial infection that causes pneumonia that is the cause of mortality.
Each year 50-150 children die of the seasonal flu, therefore the numbers quoted to date are not outside of the projected numbers.
There have been no studies linking the appearance of antibodies post vaccination with protection from getting influenza. i.e., no correlation as per the vaccine manufacturers if you read their package inserts.
The vaccine has been fast tracked and has not been thoroughly tested. Therefore, the side effects are not yet completely known.
in fact if you read the package inserts from the various vaccine manufactures(Novartis, Sonofi/Pasteur, CSL and MedImmune) they state:
“Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Neither FLUVIRIN nor the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility.”
In other words, NONE of the H1NI vaccines have been evaluated for the possible potential to cause cancer, birth defects or its effect on fertility. This is according to the information provided by all of the manufacturers in their product inserts.
