Jamaica’s Debt Rating has been Cut by Moody’s Investors Service

March 8, 2009 Leave a comment

jamaica

Jamaica’s debt rating was lowered one level by Moody’s Investors Service, which said the country’s budget deficit and debt load will increase amid the global economic slump.

New York-based Moody’s downgraded Jamaica’s credit rating to B2, five levels below investment grade, from B1. The outlook for the rating is stable, Moody’s said in a statement.

Jamaica’s budget shortfall may swell to 6 percent of the island nation’s gross domestic product this year amid declining tourism and remittances from abroad, a major source of foreign exchange, Moody’s said. Public debt may equal more than 100 percent of Jamaica’s GDP, according to Moody’s.

Keri Hilson has Responded to rumor that she Dissed Beyonce Knowles

March 8, 2009 7 comments

keri

Responding to rumor suggesting that she has mocked Beyonce Knowles and Ciara, Keri Hilson reportedly said she "wants to be distanced from the diss record." Speaking during a recent 95.5 interview in Atlanta, she also admitted that the whole idea came from DJ Polow De Pon.

Polow De Pon himself insisted that Keri, who has an album "In a Perfect World…" under her belt, "would never diss Beyonce". Though clearing up about Keri mocking Beyonce, he unfortunately said no words regarding diss upon Ciara.

Keri Hilson was rumored to make fun of Beyonce Knowles and Ciara in the remix version of her song "Turnin’ Me On". "Your vision cloudy if you think that you da best," so she sang to the lines which reportedly diss Beyonce and Ciara. "You can dance/she can sing but need to move it to the le…(Don’t do it to ‘em shawty!)/She need to go have some babies/she need to sit down she fake/Them other chicks ain’t even worth talkin bout…"

Jeremiah Wright says Obama is like any other president

March 8, 2009 2 comments

jeremiah wright

President Barack Obama’s longtime minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, gave an assessment Thursday of his former congregant’s short time in the White House: Obama is just like any other president.

Speaking in a brief interview with The Associated Press before giving a speech at a civil rights landmark, Wright smiled at the mention of the name of the nation’s first black president.

"He’s like any other president," Wright said. "He’s a politician and he’s got to do what politicians do."

Wright’s remarks were similar to those he made after his fiery preaching became a campaign issue last year, forcing Obama to distance himself from his longtime pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Black News: Charles Barkley Goes to Jail

March 8, 2009 1 comment

Basketball great Charles Barkley began serving a three-day sentence in Arizona’s infamous Tent City on Saturday, jailed by the same sheriff whose autobiography he endorsed 12 years ago.

Charles Barkley bristled at the implication he should be wearing stripes instead of a red-and-bue sweatsuit.

Charles Barkley bristled at the implication he should be wearing stripes instead of a red-and-bue sweatsuit.

"You come here when you screw up," Barkley said at a news conference hours after he reported at the Maricopa County jail. "I don’t blame anybody for this situation but myself."

Barkley, 45, pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor drunken-driving charges stemming from a New Year’s Eve arrest after he left a Scottsdale, Arizona, nightclub.

A judge sentenced him to 10 days in jail, but his sentence was reduced in exchange for Barkley’s attending an alcohol-awareness course.

At the news conference, Barkley sat next to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed "Toughest Sheriff in America." Arpaio is known for giving inmates old-fashioned, black-and-white-striped uniforms, making some of them live in tents andreinstituting chain gangs, even for women.

"I’m an equal incarcerator," Arpaio said of Barkl

U V.a: number 1 black graduation rate

For the 15th consecutive year, the University of Virginia graduated the highest percentage of African-American students of all public universities, according to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.
U.Va.’s black graduation rate tops its nearest public rival, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, by 14 percentage points, the journal reported.

Among all schools, public and private, U.Va. retained its place from last year, tied for No. 8 in the group of 29 schools with a graduation rate of 86 percent or higher for their African-American students.

"U.Va. is gratified at once again having the highest rate for African-American students of any public university in the nation," said William B. Harvey, vice president and chief officer for diversity and equity.

"It’s important to point out that of the 29 institutions with the highest graduation rates for African-American students, U.Va. is the only public university. For 15 consecutive years, this honor has been bestowed upon the institution," he said. "While it would be easy to be complacent with this level of success over such a long period of time, that hasn’t happened, and in fact, the graduation rate for 2008 is actually higher than it was 10 years ago."

the number of Black leaders in state legislatures has increased

March 7, 2009 Leave a comment

blackleadersx

President Obama is not the only black leader making history. As of last month, a record five African Americans lead state legislative bodies, and the number of black state lawmakers has reached record levels.

Those leaders are part of a growing movement of African Americans serving in state legislatures, often steppingstones to higher office. The number of black state legislators has risen from 401 in 1986 to a record 628, accounting for 9% of state lawmakers, says Morgan Cullen of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Obama is part of a breakthrough generation that benefited from the gains made by civil rights leaders, says Gwen Ifill, host of PBS’ Washington Week and author of The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. "They’re not race-driven" and seek support from all voters, she says.

President Obama Drops Stem Cell Ban

March 7, 2009 1 comment

Reversing an eight-year-old limit on potentially life-saving science, President Barack Obama plans to lift restrictions Monday on taxpayer-funded research using embryonic stem cells.

The long-promised move will allow a rush of research aimed at one day better treating, if not curing, ailments from diabetes to paralysis — research that crosses partisan lines, backed by such notables asNancy Reagan and the late Christopher Reeve. But it stirs intense controversy over whether government crosses a moral line with such research.

Obama will hold an event at the White House to announce the move, a senior administration official said Friday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the policy had not yet been publicly announced.

Embryonic stem cells are master cells that can morph into any cell of the body. Scientists hope to harness them so they can create replacement tissues to treat a variety of diseases — such as new insulin-producing cells for diabetics, cells that could help those withParkinson’s disease or maybe even Alzheimer’s, or new nerve connections to restore movement after spinal injury.

Your Black Money: Unemployment Rate Jumps to 8.1%

March 6, 2009 Leave a comment

Employers axed 651,000 jobs in February, pushing the unemployment rate to its highest in 25 years, as companies buckled under the strain of a recession that is showing no signs of ending, according to a government report.

While that figure was near economists’ expectations for a 648,000 drop in non-farm payrolls, January and December job losses were revised sharply higher.

The Labor Department on Friday said the unemployment rate surged to 8.1% in February, the highest level since December 1983. That was above market forecasts for a rise to 7.9 from January’s 7.6%.

Cost-cutting employers are resorting to even bigger layoffs as they scramble to survive the recession, feeding insecurities among those who still have jobs and those who desperately want them.

"The pace of layoffs is fast and furious," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group, before the report. "We’re still in the teeth of this recession and the bite has not let up at all."

Dallas Cowboys’ Terrell Owens Is Officially Dumped

March 6, 2009 1 comment

terrell.owens.jpg

Jerry Jones made it clear, both in action and words: Getting rid of Terrell Owens means a fresh start for the Dallas Cowboys.

T.O. was released Thursday, ending a three-year run that produced as many big headlines as big plays. Many of those headlines were about ego and attitude, and Jones has decided enough is enough. He wants the focus on winning, something the Cowboys haven’t done in the playoffs since 1996.

"In the aftermath of the season, we talked about change," Jones said in a statement. "Some of what is changing involves the process and some of it involves people. This is a decision that was made based upon consideration for an entire team.

"We will move on now with a new team — a new attitude — and into a new stadium. The evaluation process and the prospect for change will continue at every level of the organization."

Owens released a statement on his Web site thanking Jones, coach Wade Phillips and the organization "for the opportunity to be a member of the team for the past three years."

Black News: DL Hughley’s CNN Show Finally Canceled

Comedian D.L. Hughley was pummeled by critics when his weekend talk show debuted on CNN last fall. "What the hell was CNN thinking?" a columnist forAdAge asked after watching the first episode. It remains unclear what was running through the minds of CNN execs when they signed him up for the spectacularly unfunny program featuring painfully awkward interviews. But the network may have come to its senses or at least decided to cut its losses. A source tells us that CNN has decided to cancel the show due to "budgetary constraints."

Obama: U.S. can’t afford to wait on healthcare

March 6, 2009 1 comment

obama

Saying Americans cannot afford to put off an overhaul of healthcare, President Barack Obama vowed on Thursday to break the political stalemate that has blocked past efforts and pass a comprehensive plan this year.

Obama formally launched a drive for healthcare reform at a White House forum, telling about 120 experts the costly and inefficient system was dragging down the ailing U.S. economy.

"Health care reform is no longer just a moral imperative, it is a fiscal imperative," Obama said. "If we want to create jobs and rebuild our economy, then we must address the crushing cost of healthcare this year, in this administration."

Obama said he understood skepticism about the initiative given the failure of President Bill Clinton’s plan in the 1990s, which died amid heavy opposition from insurance and drug companies.

Will the Cowboys cut T.O. ?

March 6, 2009 1 comment

terrell-owens

Terrell Owens’ days in Dallas are done, according to ESPN.

ESPN cited anonymous sources Wednesday night in saying that the Cowboys have decided to cut the receiver, ridding them of a big locker-room distraction but also absorbing a big hit on their salary cap.

The team did not immediately have a comment. A spokesman for Owens said he hadn’t heard the news, and that Owens was traveling and could not immediately be reached. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, also did not immediately return a call.

Just a few weeks ago, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that T.O. was staying when he said, "You and I both know that the one that you’re asking about all the time, if I gave you the answer that you want to hear, then you would’ve already had it. So the fact you don’t have it ought to tell you something. It really should."

Jones seemed to enjoy the publicity Owens stirred up as much as the touchdowns he scored. However, there were several in-house issues involving Owens that may have ultimately prompted Jones to decide the receiver wasn’t worth the trouble he caused.

Why Black Heart Attack Patients Living In Certain Areas Are More Likely Than Whites To Be Admitted To Hospitals With Higher Mortality Rates

March 6, 2009 1 comment

heart_attack2_Full

Black heart attack patients living in racially segregated areas are 35% more likely than whites to be admitted to hospitals with higher mortality rates, even when hospitals that have better outcomes are geographically closer, according to a Health Affairs study released on Tuesday, CQ HealthBeat reports. For the study, Mary Vaughan Sarrazin, an assistant professor at the University of Iowa, and colleagues analyzed hospital admissions of Medicare beneficiaries for heart attacks in 118 health care markets between 2000 and 2005.

Researchers examined straight-line distances between the location of the patient and the hospital where they were admitted, finding that in areas with high levels of hospital segregation, 27% of black patients who lived closer to a hospital not classified as high mortality were admitted to a high-mortality hospital farther away, compared with 9% of white patients under the same circumstance.

Researchers could not determine a single factor behind the disparity but suggested that patient preference and physician referrals might be contributing factors. They also noted that blacks might feel more comfortable being seen by black physicians, who are more likely to be in hospitals with a majority of black patients.

Sudanese Soldier Says He Was Told to Rape Children

March 6, 2009 Leave a comment
The story

I wanted to believe the man in front of me wasn’t a rapist. I knew he was a former Sudanese soldier, I knew he wanted to talk about rape in Darfur. A humanitarian group working on Darfur issues had introduced him to us. They told us his testimony was important to hear.

Last year in Darfur aid workers told me children as young as five were being raped in the huge displacement camps that are home to several million Darfuris. In some camps, they told me, rape had become so common that as many as 20 babies a month born from rape were being abandoned.

As I sat inches from Adam –not his real name — I feared the revulsion I knew I would feel at my own questions as I asked about rape and his involvement. I have interviewed rape survivors in Darfur. I have two daughters. I am a human being with a conscience. It would be hard to listen to his replies.

Black Technology: Woman Sues for $5,000 AT&T Bill

March 5, 2009 1 comment

A woman who received a $5,077 bill from AT&T for data charges on her Netbook is suing the wireless carrier and RadioShack for fraud, reports Jacqui Cheng at Ars Technica.

The lawsuit alleges that the two companies conspired to promote a netbook plus data deal that deliberately misled customers and tricked them into paying thousands of dollars per month for service.

Here’s Parks’ story:

Parks purchased a netbook from RadioShack in December of 2008 after the electronics retailer began advertising a heavily subsidized netbook deal: for $99.99 and a two-year AT&T contract, customers could buy a netbook with AT&T’s DataConnect plan, allowing them to get online from anywhere. The DataConnect service costs roughly $60 per month before the usual taxes and fees.

Barack Obama Administration May Change Drug Policy

March 4, 2009 Leave a comment

marijuanaOpening Day is still a month away. The Dow is nearly at a 12-year low. The snow is blowing horizontally up and down the eastern seaboard, and Giselle is officially off the market.

It’s time to talk about marijuana.

Under President Bush, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency undertook several raids on marijuana dispensaries in California. The raids cast into sharp relief the gulf between California state law, which has legalized the distribution of marijuana for medicinal purposes, and federal law and enforcement policy under the Bush administration, which was decidedly less tolerant.

But under President Obama, the scenario might well be changing. According to this recent San Francisco Chronicle article, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is sending strong signals that President Obama – who as a candidate said states should be allowed to make their own rules on medical marijuana – will end raids on pot dispensaries in California.

“What the president said during the campaign, you’ll be surprised to know, will be consistent with what we’ll be doing here in law enforcement,” said Holder last week. “What he said during the campaign is now American policy.”

So what did Obama say on the campaign trail? He told one interviewer that it was “entirely appropriate” for a state to legalize the medical use of marijuana “with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors.”

Michael Jackson: Still Trying to Beat It

March 4, 2009 Leave a comment

Michael Jackson was due to make a "special announcement" at a London music venue this week — expected to be confirmation of his first live concerts in years.

British media said Tuesday that the troubled King of Pop will announce a string of dates at the city’s O2 Arena.

Celena Aponte, spokeswoman for the venue’s operator, AEG Live, said Jackson had arrived in London on Tuesday and would appear at apress conference at the arena on Thursday afternoon.

The days of multimillion-selling albums like "Thriller" are long gone. Jackson has kept a low profile since he was acquitted of child molestation charges in California in 2005. There have been reports of financial woes, legal troubles and health problems.

Jackson’s last live performance in Britain was at the 2006 World Music Awards. He was scheduled to perform "We Are the World" but only managed a few lines before leaving the stage.

Jackson was due to appear in a London court in November to contest a libel action for breach of contract brought by a Bahraini prince. The dispute was settled out of court at the last minute and Jackson did not appear.

The O2, formerly the Millennium Dome, is becoming a venue of choice for comeback performers. Britney Spears plays there eight nights in June, and Prince did a 21-day series of shows in 2007.

Hope turned to despair late Tuesday afternoon as the Coast Guard called off a search for Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, free agent defensive end Corey Smith and former South Florida tight end Will Bleakley, missing for nearly three days while on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico.

The boaters, who set out Saturday morning off the coast of Clearwater, Fla., flipped their boat about 30 miles out while trying to raise anchor about 5 p.m. ET that night, according to Coast Guard Capt. Timothy Close. A Coast Guard search covering 24,000 square miles recovered one man, Nick Schuyler, clinging to the hull of the 21-foot boat Monday. But by Tuesday evening, more than 60 hours after the search began, the Coast Guard told the families it would not continue.

Barack Obama’s Budget Gets Push Back

March 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Republicans attacked President Obama’s proposed $3.6 trillion budget Tuesday as offering "red ink as far as the eye can see," and Democrats even suggested that the president might be trying to solve too many problems at once.

As administration officials trekked to Capitol Hill to defend Obama’s budget, they were met with skepticism from both sides of the aisle because of the huge changes the president has promised to make in taxes, health care, energy and education.

THE OVAL: Proposals and analysis

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House Budget Director Peter Orszag, in separate appearances, stuck to the administration line that the president’s budget would benefit 95% of working Americans.

Higher taxes for affluent Americans would not come until 2011 once "we are safely into recovery," Geithner told the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

"I’m confident this is the right path for the country," he said.

But Republicans disagreed.

"The president’s budget increases taxes on every American, and does so during a recession," Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., told Geithner.

Camp also complained about provisions that would limit the size of charitable deductions that could be taken by families earning more than $250,000 a year.

Orszag faced similar questioning before the House Budget Committee.

Black Sports: Redskins Jason Taylor Cut for Refusing Off-season workouts

March 3, 2009 1 comment

In this Oct. 12, 2008, file photo, Washington Redskins linebacker Jason Taylor sits on the bench during an NFL football game against the St. Louis Rams in Landover, Md. The Redskins have released Taylor, one year after signing the former NFL defensive player of the year.

After a year of “Dancing With the Stars” and struggling with the Washington Redskins, Jason Taylor wanted some family time.

He’s got his wish.

The former NFL defensive player of the year’s disappointing turn in the nation’s capital came to an end Monday when he was cut by the Redskins for refusing to commit to the team’s offseason workout program.

The Redskins wanted to add a workout clause to Taylor’s hefty contract, but the 34-year-old defensive end declined. The clause would have required Taylor to take part in 25 days of offseason workouts.

“He wanted to spend the offseason with his family,” said Taylor’s agent, Gary Wichard. “He just kind of chose family over going up there.”

The flap is reminiscent of last year, when Taylor clashed with the Miami Dolphins for competing in “Dancing With the Stars” rather than working out with the team in the offseason. Taylor finished second to Kristi Yamaguchi on the reality television show, then was shipped by the Dolphins to the Redskins.

That meant Taylor spent virtually the entire year apart from his wife and children in Florida.

“He had been away for four months in Los Angeles, then he got back to Miami and then he got traded,” Wichard said. “He wanted to spend time with his three kids.”

Black Politics: Michael Steele vs. Rush Limbaugh

March 3, 2009 5 comments

Over the weekend, Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele called Rush Limbaugh’s rhetoric "incendiary" and "ugly" and insisted that he, not Limbaugh, is in charge of the GOP.

"Rush will say what Rush has to say; we'll do what we have to do," RNC Chairman Michael Steele has said.

"Rush will say what Rush has to say; we’ll do what we have to do," RNC Chairman Michael Steele has said.

But that was two days ago. Monday, after a blistering response from the conservative talk-radio kingpin, Steele told the online journal Politico that he "was maybe a little bit inarticulate."

"There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership," Steele said. He added, "There are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way."

Steele’s original remarks came from an interview on CNN’s "D.L. Hughley Breaks the News," which aired Saturday. They came as Democrats, including White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, have tried to paint Limbaugh — who has said he wants to see the Obama administration "fail" — as the effective head of the opposition party.

Steele rejected the idea, saying, "I’m the de facto leader of the Republican Party."

"Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh’s whole thing is entertainment," Steele told CNN. "Yes, it is incendiary. Yes, it is ugly." iReport.com: Limbaugh and Steele show divisions in GOP

Limbaugh fired back on his radio show Monday, saying the Republican chairman appears to be supporting President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He said Steele appears "obsessed with seeing to it President Obama succeeds."

"I frankly am stunned that the chairman of the Republican National Committee endorses such an agenda," Limbaugh said. "I have to conclude that he does, because he attacks me for wanting it to fail."

Black News: Another Obama Nominee with Tax Problems

March 3, 2009 1 comment

Tax Troubles: Take Five opened at the White House Monday with revelations that another of President Obama’s Cabinet-level nominees has problems with unpaid taxes.

The Senate Finance Committee announced Monday that Ron Kirk, nominee for trade representative, owes roughly $10,000 in taxes from 2005, 2006 and 2007 for speaking fees he donated to his alma mater.

The former Dallas mayor routinely gave his speaking fees directly to Austin College in Sherman, Texas, instead of accepting them, reporting them as income and paying taxes on them, the committee said. It said he has agreed to pay the debt.

Kirk, a lawyer in private practice, also deducted $17,382 for tickets to Dallas Mavericks basketball games as entertainment expenses but could not substantiate more than 7,000 of the expenses, so he owes $2,600 in back taxes for those expenses, the committee said.

Kirk, who served as Dallas mayor from 1995-2001, is the fifth Obama nominee to run into tax trouble.

Donald Trump probably knows TLC as the cable network, not the biggest female group of the 1990s.

In fact, the host of “Celebrity Apprentice” (season two debuting Sunday on NBC at 9 p.m.) had trouble pronouncing Atlanta’s own Tionne “T Boz” Watkins’ first name. Watkins said he kept saying “T-own” instead of of the proper “T-on.” So after awhile, he just called her “T.”

Hip hop “is probably not part of his world,” she mused in a phone interview Tuesday.

But Watkins said she did not go out of her way to kiss his tuckus. Plus, “I didn’t Omarosa it,” she said, turning one of the most infamous “Apprentice” contestants of yore into a verb. Compared to the likes of Andrew “Dice” Clay and Dennis Rodman, “I made boring TV.”

Rather, she focused on making sure the Sickle Cell Foundation was front and center, not her ego. What makes her charity hit so close to home is she was born with Sickle Cell and has had to cope with the fatigue and a weak immune system all her life. See her video below:

“Black Women Should Show and Prove” says surveyed CEOs

Even if you have a driver’s license, if you’ve never driven before (or if your supervisor doesn’t know that you’ve driven before) then no one will not want to trust you to take the wheel of a school bus; especially when the road is icy and mountainous.

Though it seems like a stretch to compare the job of a CEO to that of a bus driver, the analogy is fitting, according to Ancella Livers, executive director of the Executive Leadership Council’s (ELC) Institute for Leadership Development & Research. Driving a bus carrying precious lives and cargo in bad weather is similar to running a company in these uncertain economic times. If no one knows you have experience doing it, then they aren’t going to allow you to do it.

The Black Women Executives Research Initiative, a year-long study conducted by the ELC polling 150 executives from a broad range of industries, services and locales, found that African-American women face serious challenges if they desire to take the reigns of their company as CEO. Thirty-one percent of CEOs say those challenges are attributed to a lack of strategic networks, 24% blame them on inaccurate perceptions of black women’s capabilities and 23% believe the problem lies with work life balance demands.

Dr Boyce: Chris Brown and Rihanna Back Together? What?

March 2, 2009 4 comments

By Dr. Boyce Watkins

www.BoyceWatkins.com

Forgive me for diving into the crazy world of pop culture, but the fact that Chris Brown and Rihanna are a couple again is something on which I had to comment. I am not speaking on the issue because I love Chris Brown or Rihanna’s music (they are ok). I am commenting because young people need to have a serious conversation about relationships and domestic violence.

Here’s the deal: I don’t know exactly what Chris Brown did and did not do. From the picture I saw and police reports, it appears that he may have done some serious damage to Rihanna’s face. Again, I am not convicting Chris Brown and I am not pretending to know if he is a bad human being. In fact, Chris Brown could very easily be a good man who did a very bad thing. But if he did do this damage to Rihanna, then he should pay a price for his actions.

But it appears that Chris won’t be paying a price, since Rihanna does not seem to be interested in pressing charges. Rihanna’s actions are nothing new: Every day, across America, women are beaten to a pulp by their boyfriends, and then choose to excuse their inexcusable behavior. The prosecutor prepares a solid case that will send the guy packing for years, and the case falls through because the woman chooses not to press charges. So, as extraordinary as Rihanna might be as a performer, her behavior is actually quite ordinary.

Chris Brown, if he was the cause of the facial damage shown on pictures released to the media, seriously needs counseling. He needs to learn that growing up watching your father beat your mother (as Chris admitted on the Tyra Banks show) may establish a destructive social norm, thus making you believe that violence is appropriate in male/female relationships. He also needs to learn about the serious consequences for brothers who choose to beat up on their partners. Even if Rihanna is crazy, provocative or evil, you have no business laying your hands on a woman. Not only is violence wrong, but it will land you in a criminal justice system that destroys the lives of young black men every day. I understand young people making mistakes (I’ve made far too many to count), but you must learn from those mistakes, and we are not doing young people any favors by pretending that this didn’t happen.

Rihanna needs her own counselor. She needs one that will give her and other young women the self-esteem to realize that there are few genuine excuses for a man to put his hands on you. She needs to have someone who truly understands where all this is going, to make her realize that no matter how cute he is, how popular, how rich, or how charming, a man like this can eventually kill you. You don’t know domestic violence until you’ve seen DEATH. It starts innocently enough, and eventually escalates to the point that someone is in the morgue. Any self-respecting adult should, in my humble opinion, refuse to sit idly to the side and allow your teenager to ponder reasons that Chris Brown should have hit Rihanna. No, he should not have done this, and I encourage Chris to make sure he sends the same message.

Old people can be obnoxious. We pee on the parades of young love by writing articles like the one I am writing right now. I hate doing this, but I have my reasons. My friend, a professor in Florida, died at the hands of her husband, who then killed himself and left her two young children without parents. This happens every day, and most of these cases start out like the situation between Chris and Rihanna. In fact, your daughter, friend, sister or cousin may have that lovable boyfriend who only shows peeks and hints of violent behavior, but just enough that your gut is telling you something isn’t quite right. Listen to your instincts, for they’re trying to tell you something. Love should not end with anybody getting punched. Domestic violence is not a silent killer…..it usually warns you all along the way. Whether you choose to listen is up to you.

10 Things You Should Consider about the State of the Black Union

March 1, 2009 5 comments

By Dr. Boyce Watkins

www.BoyceWatkins.com

I love Tavis smiley and I love the State of the Black Union. I must also admit that my mouth (which my mother used to say will either “make me great or get me killed”) has probably burned any bridge I’ve had with Tavis, thus implying that you will likely never see me on a panel at The State of the Black Union conference. I am ok with that, since I don’t like traveling when I don’t have to, and I don’t like the idea of having to kiss pinky rings of old school leadership in order to fit in (once you accept someone’s support, you can become beholden to them, reducing your ability to be honest). Beyond that, I have a nasty habit of telling the truth, which is neither profitable nor popular. So, the Your Black World Coalition is going to be my venue of choice when it comes to matters of Black Public Policy. Our corporate sponsors are clean, which means that we have a green light to do what’s right without worrying about offending Exxon Mobile, Walmart, The Republican Party, or McDonald’s. Again, I say this with all love and respect for Tavis Smiley.

As a Finance Professor who has spent the last 20 years studying money, I want us to understand the nature of how financial incentives can play a role in the nature of a forum such as The State of the Black Union. This is especially true in the midst of a financial crisis, during which our financial challenges may lead us to make decisions that are not always in the best interests of our constituents. I want to make it clear that my commentary on the State of the Black Union in the past has not been intended to be destructively critical in any way, as I feel that the forum is an important and necessary component of the Black community. But I am going to propose some quick thoughts about the State of the Black Union that should be considered for the future. If this venue is to be considered an important component and gathering of some segments of Black leadership, it is critical that we understand how to properly manage the temptation by some to use the venue as a source of power.

1) Corporate sponsors should be properly vetted: If the State of the Black Union is to be presented as the pseudo-diplomatic forum that Tavis Smiley wants us to perceive it to be, then just any old sponsor simply won’t do. No banks accused of predatory lending using the venue to wash away their sins with a donation to the Tavis Smiley Bank account. No firms trying to sell liquor, tobacco or other products. No companies which appear to get rich from exploiting the poor. All potential corporate sponsors should be evaluated by an unbiased committee and careful consideration should be given to the nature of the donor, where the money is going and other ways that the sponsor must prove their interest in serving the community. President Obama would never allow his State of the Union address to be sponsored by enemies of his country, but that is what we are doing if we allow any dirty corporation to walk through the door to give us money for our forums.

2) Consider the political agendas: I went to a great conference a couple of years ago in Atlanta, and wondered why there were so many videos and speeches being shared that had nothing but good things to say about the Bush Administration. It didn’t take me long to figure out why – The Bush Administration was a major donor to the conference, and in exchange for their money, they wanted the organizers to persuade Black folks to become Republicans and to love George Bush. I don’t think it worked. The lesson to be learned is that taking care of the gatekeepers can mean that those behind the gate are being manipulated. Don’t let another man sell your brain. If your brain gets sold, you should get the money.

3) Be careful with the Obama-Haterology: It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Tavis Smiley was a clear “homie” to Hillary Clinton. This close relationship, as well as some hope that he might be her Press Secretary, led to some “interesting” words being fired across the aisle last year as Barack Obama chose not to attend the conference. This forum is designed for the people and should not be used to reflect the personal agendas of a few powerful men. One must draw the line between carefully considered critiques on The White House vs. politicized attacks in response to being “dissed”. I too have critiqued our president, but I have always wanted him to succeed.

4) Kill the self-righteousness: There is no boss of the Black community. We are not children who need to be told what’s best for us. Being of a strong religious background, Tavis Smiley can sometimes become more of a preacher than a leader. There is this idea that he and a few others know the solutions and the rest of us don’t have a damn clue. Please get over your selves….we’re all smart people. This does not, for one second, imply that strategic and intelligent guidance cannot be meaningful. But this guidance must be balanced with mutual respect for the people you are serving.

5) Kill the “flossing”: Sometimes, when people get on their respective soap boxes, the forum can become a contest of who can make the most earth-shattering, slap-ya-leg, koolaid-coming-out-of-your-nose, “hoo-hoo-she-sure-is-funny!” moment. Due to the presence of media, which many people on the panel are seeking by attending this forum, we can be pressured to entertain more than enlighten. While entertainment is excellent, the focus must be on commentary which educates the public. I encourage the audience to watch the forum and listen to the content and substance of the rhetoric, and not be swayed by distractive inflections, body language or vocal tones. Some of us are very good at saying a lot and saying nothing, all at the same time.

6) FYI – Here is the source of Smiley’s power (for which I congratulate him): He gets C-span to show up and he has access to major White corporations. Were there no media and/or no corporate sponsorship, The State of the Black Union forum would cease to exist. This is not to disrespect the nature of the platform, but to help those who don’t understand business and media to see why so many of our leaders flock to the forum and why many Black leaders gladly appear on Fox News. Since they don’t have any other outlets for their work, this is one of the few provided. This gives a great deal of power to the owner of the platform, sort of like having the only grocery store or hospital in town. When Black folks get more ownership of media (even online media), the need to succumb to the power of others will cease to exist.

7) This is not the only forum in Black America: Kevin Powell, a man who will eventually be elected to Congress, holds Black male empowerment forums in New York City. The “Your Black World Coalition” has done amazing work in the past. “Color of Change” engages in meaningful, effective protest that is not sponsored by any of the corporations known for the exploitation of African Americans. “Dangerous Negro” is a group of young, intelligent brothers who are changing campuses across the world. Tavis Smiley’s insinuation that The State of the Black Union forum is the place you must be if you truly care about Black people is simply wrong. You can be in a lot of places and still care about Black people, which is why there are a lot of Black Bloggers, Black leaders and Black business people who are choosing not to attend The State of the Black Union.

8) The Money Makes a difference: I am a Finance Professor, which makes me the last person to criticize anyone for showing up to collect the cash flow. But the truth is that money is POWER. Money determines what we do and who we do it with. So, the idea that (what some consider to be) one of the most critical forums in the Black community is driven by corporate sponsorship granted by our historical oppressors is a very serious and problematic contradiction. I encourage us to find ways to sponsor other forums without sponsorship from mainstream corporate America so that we can speak real truth to power.

9) The Covenant with Black America: This is a great book. But it is still just a book. It is a book written to make a profit. When you see the book being advertised to you, there is a business model designed to sell the book. It is not the most important book in Black history, it is not necessarily a “must-read” for you and your kids. It’s just a book. Remember that. If the advertisers convince you that it is a “must-read”, then they’ve achieved their corporate objectives.

10) We need Tavis Smiley: Tavis, like most of us, has to make a living. He has done an amazing job with his work and platforms, and like the rest of us, he is not perfect. If you are compelled by his work, you should support him and support The State of the Black Union, I know I will. Also, just because Tavis seemed to have personal reasons for his attacks on Barack Obama, that doesn’t mean that his critiques were invalid. Yes, we have a Black President, but we need Black leaders. The greatest Black leader in the world is the one you see in the mirror. Get out there and do your thing.

US plans to boycott UN racism conference

March 1, 2009 3 comments

45758_resized_un_racism_conference

The Obama administration said Friday that the United States will boycott an upcoming U.N. conference on racism unless its final document is changed to drop all references to Israel and the defamation of religion.

At the same time, it said the U.S. would participate as an observer in meetings of the U.N. Human Rights Council, a body that was shunned by the Bush administration for anti-Israel statements and failing to act on abuses in Sudan and other states.

The racism conference is a follow-up to the contentious 2001 meeting in the South African city of Durban that was dominated by clashes over the Middle East and the legacy of slavery.

The U.S. and Israel walked out midway through that meeting over a draft resolution that singled out Israel for criticism and likened Zionism — the movement to establish and maintain a Jewish state — to racism.

man from Chicago Arrested for Allegedly Targeting Obama With HIV-Infected Blood

March 1, 2009 1 comment

obama

A man from President Obama’s hometown of Chicago has been arrested for allegedly sending Obama and his staff envelopes containing HIV-infected blood, in the hopes of killing or harming them.

It’s only the second time ever that HIV-infected blood has been sent with malicious intent through the U.S. mail system, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said.

In the weeks leading up to Obama’s inauguration, Saad Hussein, an Ethiopian refugee in his late 20s, sent an envelope addressed to "Barack Obama" to offices of the Illinois government in Springfield, Ill., according to court documents.

The envelope contained a series of curious items, including a letter with reddish stains and an admission ticket for Obama’s election-night celebration in Chicago’s Grant Park. Court documents said Hussein, who takes drugs to treat a mental illness, later told FBI agents he is "very sick with HIV" and cut his fingers with a razor so he could bleed on the letter.

Hazmat teams were called in after the envelope was opened, and offices of the Illinois Department on Aging and the Department of Revenue were locked down for nearly two hours, locking 300 staffers in their offices, court documents said.

why tyler Perry is pondering Madea’s demise

March 1, 2009 2 comments

tyler

Tyler Perry wants Madea dead.

That may come as a surprise, given the big-hearted but foul-tempered, pistol-packin’ granny has emerged as director-writer-producer-actor Perry’s signature character — and, now, his cash cow.

"Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail" topped the U.S. box office last weekend with $41 million in its first three days of release. The dramedy marks Perry’s all-time opening weekend, and is poised to sprint past the overall take of his top-grossing film, "Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion" (2006).

Still, Perry confesses: "I would love to see Madea die a slow death in the next film."

The reason? It takes a lot of effort to turn the 6-foot-5-inch Perry into big momma Madea.

He knows she’s "a whole lot of fun to watch. But to do it is a nightmare," Perry says.

"It’s all one suit that I’m zipped into, so it’s all heavy. The hips are heavy. And the more I sweat, the heavier it gets. I see why women have back problems who have large breasts. Holding those things upright can be tough."

Black News: Comedian Chris Rock Sued by Woman for Rape

March 1, 2009 1 comment

It’s been more than a decade since Chris Rock and a shapely blond model struck up a conversation over Sunday brunch at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. The relationship that followed was brief — two dinner dates — but there seems to be no end to the fallout from the liaison.

The second date led back to Rock’s hotel room, which led to sex — he has said he was separated from his wife at the time — which led to a paternity suit, then tabloid headlines, an allegation of rape, the hiring of private investigator Anthony Pellicano, two DNA tests, a confidential settlement, testimony before a federal jury and, on Thursday, the revelation of a new civil suit.

Zimbabwe’s Mugabe Criticized for Lavish Birthday Party

March 1, 2009 1 comment

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was celebrating his 85th birthday with a lavish all-day party Saturday despite the fact that the country is gripped by an economic and health crisis.

President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace, attend a cake-cutting ceremony for his birthday Saturday.

President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace, attend a cake-cutting ceremony for his birthday Saturday.

Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party said it raised at least $250,000 to hold the party in Mugabe’s hometown of Chinhoyi, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) outside of the capital, Harare.

Critics of the president say the country is desperate for that amount of money to be spent instead on its citizens, who are suffering from a cholera outbreak, food shortages, and spiraling hyperinflation. On Friday, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai visited a hospital’s closed intensive care unit that he said needed $30,000 to resume operating.

During the celebrations, Mugabe announced that his controversial land reform would not be reversed. The program is designed to have white-owned farms given to blacks, and there have been violent seizures of such farms since the program began in 2000.

He emphasized that the country’s "indigenization program" — which forces all major foreign companies operating in Zimbabwe to have at least 51 percent black ownership — will be carried out. It began last year and hasn’t been implemented yet.

Mugabe’s birthday falls on February 21 but his party loyalists postponed the celebrations as they were raising money for the event.
